When Lester Koenig produced Burning Spirits for Contemporary in 1970, jazz was moving in many different directions. Commercially, jazz had lost a lot of ground to rock and R&B, but creatively, it was incredibly healthy and offered a wide variety of options – everything from fusion, soul-jazz, and funky organ combos to bossa nova, Afro-Cuban jazz, modal post-bop, cool jazz, and Dixieland revivalists. Sonny Simmons represented free jazz, which was considered jazz's lunatic fringe (certainly in bop circles) but was exciting and invigorating if you understood what was going on.

Western Electric (John Simmons Short Fiction Award) by Don Zancanella
English | Nov. 1, 1996 | ISBN: 0877455678 | 142 Pages | PDF | 5 MB

Cumulatively, the eight stories in this exceptionally cohesive first collection feel novelistic in scope and scale. Most of the tales are set in the wide open spaces of Wyoming, ranging in time from 1868 to the late 1970s. A strong sense of how landscape and geography shape and mold character permeates the book. In the clever and subtle "Disarmament," two loners, one an Air Force captain in charge of maintaining decoy missile silos, the other a schoolteacher from Cheyenne who rents a two-room cabin on the prairie each summer, discover each other through their affinity for the plains.

Imaginary Men (John Simmons Short Fiction Award Series) by Enid Shomer
English | Mar. 1, 1993 | ISBN: 0877453993 | 165 Pages | PDF | 6 MB

Eleven short stories with many American Jewish characters deal with connections and disconnections of tradition and family, love, and sex.
Even the tamest characters in Imaginary Men test the rules to see where they can be broken and where they hold true. In Enid Shomer's world, endless misunderstandings sprout from goodwill, women and men burn with a desire that forces them to create themselves as they evolve, people grasp their relatedness to others only fleetingly, goodness is as great a mystery as evil.
