Trumpeter-Flugelhornist Clark Terry is one of the most recorded jazz artists. Recording live at the Jazzhouse in Hamburg, Germany, Terry is spurred on by a world-class rhythm section that includes bassist Larry Gales of Thelonious Monk fame. Terry’s warm, personable tone, technical mastery and inventiveness sizzles throughout as he takes on an up-tempo Ellington “Perdido” and exhibits his famous “mumbles” scat singing style on “Jazzhouse Blues”. Wham! With quotes and asides galore, it’s a merry musical go ‘round.

Bestselling author and columnist Carl Hiaasen returns with another hysterical mystery for kids set in Florida's Everglades. Bunny Starch, the most feared biology teacher ever, is missing. She disappeared after a school field trip to Black Vine Swamp. And, to be honest, the kids in her class are relieved. But when the principal tries to tell the students that Mrs. Starch has been called away on a "family emergency," Nick and Marta just don't buy it. No, they figure the class delinquent, Smoke, has something to do with her disappearance. And he does! But not in the way they think.

"A Classy Pair" is a most apt title for this session, which features Ella Fitzgerald and the final incarnation of the Count Basie Orchestra, perhaps the last major big band to exist under the baton of its namesake. Recorded in February 1979 and produced by the legendary Norman Granz, these nine tracks show Fitzgerald in a somewhat better light than the orchestra.

Part of a Fantasy sampler series that features musicians (and in this case a notable vocalist) performing the blues, this CD features Ella Fitzgerald on 11 performances taken from a variety of sessions. Although she never specialized in the blues, Ella had no difficulty swinging over blues changes and sometimes putting strong emotion into the lowdown variety. There is one song apiece from the 1950s and '60s, while the remainder of the program dates from 1971-1979.

On September 24th 1973, Sarah Vaughan climaxed a tour of Japan with a concert at Sun Plaza Hall in Tokyo. Fortunately this is not one of these extraordinary musical events that endure only in the memories of those in attendance. The concert was recorded and the result ranks among the most durably rewarding of all of Sarah Vaughan's albums. In my own view, this two-volume triumph is matched only by a Gershwin set Sarah recorded some years ago under the aegis of Bobby Shad who also produced this album. Sarah's transmutation of Gershwin songs is no longer available according to the Schwann catalogue and therefore this Tokyo revelation of the full range of Sarah's prowess is all the more valuable.
