Starting in the late '50s, Gerry Mulligan recorded a series of encounters with fellow saxophonists that included such immortals as Stan Getz, Paul Desmond, Johnny Hodges and Ben Webster. In 1986 he resumed the practice for this one date on which his baritone is matched with the tenor of the young great Scott Hamilton. The music, which includes warm ballads and fairly hot romps (five of the seven songs are Mulligan originals), consistently swing and are quite enjoyable.

The Japanese liner notes call this combo – Harry Allen-Scott Hamilton New York Sextet – the first two-tenor team to be formed in the 21st century. I'm not sure about THE first in the century, but surely it is one of the most notable, and welcome, two-tenor teams in recent memory. Harry Allen and Scott Hamilton add their own contributions to the "two tenor" tradition built by such teams as Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, and Al Cohn and Zoot Sims. Allen and Hamilton's modern day team is one of relaxed, friendly competition and mutual admiration that is perhaps most reminiscent of the Cohn-Sims combo. Their shared style decidedly leans to mainstream, straight-ahead swing, and they are not into showing off their skills or outstaging the partner.

The film The Sweet Smell of Success, released in 1957 was a barely disguised film noir study on columnist Walter Winchell. Originally released in two volumes, one featuring the score and the other the jazz elements are now combined into this re-mastered and mixed edition, a milestone in the history of film-scoring. Playing piano on this record is film music icon John Williams. Other all-stars include Shelly Manne, Paul Horn, Pete Condoli, Ted Nash, and more.

Voted the number two big band playing in the mid-'00s by a Jazz Times Reader's Poll, the popular, Grammy nominated, L.A.-based ensemble the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra celebrated 20 years of maintaining and expanding the big band jazz tradition in 2005. As the adage goes, the live setting is where the spirit of jazz really happens, and this recording, Live at MCG – recorded over a four-day "residency" at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh in May 2004 – perfectly captures Clayton-Hamilton's spontaneous spirit.
