Philip Glass’ Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra, composed in 2000 and transcribed for wind ensemble by Mark Lortz in 2004, is a significant addition to the repertoire of large-scale works for timpani. The work is rhythmically galvanizing, sonically alluring, and features virtuoso cadenzas for both soloists. Symphony No 4 ‘In the Shadow of No Towers’ is Mohammed Fairouz’s first major work for wind ensemble, and its inspiration is the provocative comic book by Art Spiegelman, written shortly after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Spiegelman himself has commented: “I’m moved by [this] scary, somber, and seriously silly symphony…I’m honored that the composer found an echo in my work that allowed him to strike a responsive chord and express his own complex responses to post 9/11 America. He emerges from the rubble with a very tony piece of high-brow cartoon music.”

1991's Recycled is the third and final album by the melodic hard rock band Prophet. Like its predecessor (Cycle of the Moon), Recycled featured former Surgin' main man Russell Arcara on vocals. Appropriately, Recycled follows the same formula as Cycle of the Moon. The album is a straightforward melodic hard rock release, with big guitar hooks, prominent keyboards and of course a couple of ballads.

The Best AOR / Pomp album of all times? For many people, PROPHET's self-titled debut it is. A fusion of '80s AOR and Melodic Rock with late Seventies bright progressive / pomp rock, this album is pure gold from start to finish. As in most albums of those mentioned styles, keyboards / synths play a fundamental role adding to the complexity of the song structures. Vocal duties are handled by no less than three of the band's members, and one of them is Ted Poley (who of course would later front Danger Danger), who actually is the drummer of the band here.

What is it like to practice your faith in an environment dominated by another? To evolve as a people when all of the world around you moves to religious and cultural rhythms very different from your own? To maintain your unity as a living community—and always to be aware of that sense of community—even when your numbers have been scattered across many lands, without a common government, a common country, or even a common language?
