Despite the unfortunately cheesy artwork, Out of The Dark Room collects some 24 of Max Richter’s “most beautiful compositions for film” c. 2008-2015, issued in the wake of his string of major solo and score releases. So great is Richter’s wingspan now that you’ve maybe heard some of them without realising they’re from the Richter scale - a definite measure by which to hold up modern classical film soundtracks.

It's easy to discount crossover albums by Hollywood stars as either a publicity stunt or the indulgence of a celebrity at the peak of their popularity. Following the second season of her wildly successful turn as the star of CBS's Wonder Woman television series, actress Lynda Carter crossed over into the pop world with her recording debut Portrait. Fortunately, hers was an indulgence worth taking. As it turns out, long before she wielded the lasso of truth or flew an invisible jet, Carter had sung in bands as an Arizona teenager, even dropping out of college to pursue a short-lived music career in San Francisco. She eventually landed in L.A. and in 1975 earned the acting role which made her an icon, but music had been a major part of her life and she now had the power and connections to pick up that thread.

The purveyors of the past at Collectors' Choice Music deserve major props for their top-shelf restoration of the 5th Dimension's Soul City and Bell Records catalogs. Contained on this CD are the vocal quintet's fifth and six studio titles, 1970's Portrait and 1971's Love's Lines, Angles and Rhymes. These projects find the 5D boasting the considerable talents of Lamonte McLemore, Ron Townson, Billy Davis, Jr., Marilyn McCoo, and Florence Larue at the peak of their prowess, building upon a streak of pop hits that had already yielded such timeless entries as "Stoned Soul Picnic," "Wedding Bell Blues," and the definitive '60s anthem "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In (The Flesh Failures)."

This is a re-issue, in an improved version, of Christopher Nupens best-selling DVD previously released through Opus Arte it now appears on the Christopher Nupen Films label for the first time. As usual with Christopher Nupen DVDs, this one contains two films: the famous portrait film of Jacqueline du Prй which includes the complete Elgar cello Concerto in a performance which has become legendary and a performance film, The Ghost (Beethovens Trio Op. 70 No. 1) with Daniel Barenboim and Pinchas Zukerman; described by the French opera and film director Jean-Pierre Ponnelle as the most successful translation of musical performance onto the screen that he had ever seen. And, also as usual with Christopher Nupen films, these are lit, shot and edited in the style of cinema film, not television. The results are visually impressive and totally unlike what usually appears on television screens an important, defining characteristic of this DVD.
