This disc contains an all-star cast headed up by Thelonious Monk (piano) and includes some collaborative efforts with Sonny Rollins (tenor sax) that go beyond simply inspired and into a realm of musical telepathy. The five tunes included on Work are derived from three separate sessions held between November of 1953 and September of the following year. As is often the case, this likewise means that there are three distinct groups of musicians featured.

A beautiful warm late summer night it was when five musicians started one of their most remarkable outdoor concerts in the City of Berlin. To protect the local bats the band had to accept a curfew by 10 pm which was rather sad, because they had a lot more on their playlist. But nevertheless it has been a breathtaking event for those who could attend. On this DVD you will see the whole show and some extras behind the scenes, some with a laugh and some with an ironic attitude. So enjoy a warm summer night’s show!

Drama | 1.78:1 | Color | Macedonian, English, Albanian Dolby Digital 2.0 | English Subtitles | 113 min

The first film made in the newly independent Republic of Macedonia, Milcho Manchevski’s Before the Rain crosscuts the stories of an orthodox Christian monk (Grégoire Colin), a British photo agent (Katrin Cartlidge), and a native Macedonian war photographer (Rade Šerbedžija) to paint a portrait of simmering ethnic and religious hatred about to reach its boiling point. Made during the strife of the war-torn Balkan states in the nineties, this gripping triptych of love and violence is also a timeless evocation of the loss of pastoral innocence, and remains one of recent cinema’s most powerful laments on the futility of war.

At once both an eccentric black comedy and a humanistic portrait of pre-Hiroshima Japan, Dr. Akagi is a triumphant work that solidifies Shohei Imamura's status as Japan's greatest living film-maker. Bubbling over with doses of savage wit, kinky sexuality, and apocalyptic uncertainty, the film writes a prescription for weirdness that is hard to forget. Set on small Japanese island in the final days of World War II, Dr. Akagi is the story of one man's obsession to retain his decency and stamp out a deadly disease. When a dreaded epidemic breaks out, Akagi takes to literally running from house call to house call. From the fringes of Japanese society, the un-orthodox physician soon gathers a motley crew of helpers: a dissolute monk, a nihilistic morphine-addicted surgeon, an ex-prostitute, and a wounded Dutch soldier. Using medical practices that aren't strictly from the manual, Akagi and his group make a loony and quixotic effort to locate the disease-causing microbes. It's an uphill battle; the real enemy, however, is not illness, but the spreading militaristic mania that overcame Japan in the last days of the war. Dr. Akagi is a completely original film that mixes sex, the atomic bomb, and germs with the dark comedy that is Imamura's trademark. But like his previously acclaimed films (The Eel, Vengeance is Mine), the director also makes an important statement – Dr. Akagi poweruflly portrays Japan's moral weakness during WWII.

If one were to have access to a time machine and could go back to see legendary bandleader Thelonious Monk in concert during the 1950s and ‘60s, you’d likely see him so compelled by the music that he would retreat from his piano mid-performance and conduct his band, no matter how small or large, through an impassioned dance. But behind the joyous dance that overtook the stage lay the societal struggles a jazz musician endured to present that 90 minutes of musical freedom – a tale of police harassment, systemic oppression and constant battles for equality. Fast forward to 2017 and composer-arranger-pianist John Beasley is using Monk’s spontaneous movements and experiences as the basis for conducting radically reconceived versions of the late composer’s music for his critically acclaimed big band project: MONK’estra.
