Trey Anastasio's The Horseshoe Curve is a collection of cuts taken off the shelf as a stopgap between the guitarist's "real" albums – at release time, Anastasio was in the fourth month of a court-ordered yearlong drug rehab program. It's too bad in a sense, because it's such a dazzling recording, taken from a period between 2002-2004 when he was touring and recording with this woolly mammoth of a band; it's also far above the level of the two recordings he released during that period: Shine (2005) and Bar 17 (2006).

Here are two of Rossini's "secular" cantatas: "The Lament of Harmony on the Death of Orpheus" for tenor, male chorus, and orchestra, written when he was a 16-year-old conservatory student, and the far more substantial "Wedding of Thetis and Peleus," one of many such pieces he composed for special occasions, commissioned for the marriage of an Italian princess to a French prince. Both consist of primarily short, separate, contrasting numbers, most of which would be perfectly at home in the opera house.

Each of the three symphonies on this recording represents a significant milestone in Havergal Brians long musical journey, and each demonstrates the breadth of his symphonic approach. No. 8 was the first of Brians symphonies to be performed and is one of his most gripping and unpredictable, full of sonic invention. Behind the more apparently genial and expansive No. 21 lies profound emotional complexity, while No. 26 embodies elements of a divertimento though it retains disquieting outbursts. Gramophone wrote of the previous Brian recording by these forces (8.573408): The New Russia State Symphony Orchestra do the music proud. This release completes the commercial recording of all 32 of Brians symphonies on Naxos and Marco Polo.

The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and conductor Daniele Gatti join with the Netherlands Radio Choir and soloists Chen Reiss and Karen Cargill for a vibrant live recording of Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in C Minor "Resurrection”. The history of the world-famous orchestra is interlinked with that of Mahler's own, and the Concertgebouw musicians certainly appear to have an affinity for this music, offering up a rousing and intense interpretation of this well-known symphony with sparkling vocal contributions from Reiss and Cargill.

This new release by the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hannu Lintu is an all-Sibelius programme featuring internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter. The album includes two major tone poems by Jean Sibelius, Tapiola and En Saga, combined with a set of songs orchestrated by Aulis Sallinen (b. 1935) in 2015. Sibeliuss tone poem Tapiola, written shortly after the 7th Symphony, may be regarded as the culmination of a period that began with the Fifth Symphony, a period where Sibelius created music that grew organically out of tiny germs into huge processes. It was completed in 1926 and remained Sibeliuss last great orchestral work.
