Eric Clapton has often stated that JJ Cale is one of the single most important figures in rock history, a sentiment echoed by many of his fellow musicians. Cale's influence on Clapton and many of today's artists cannot be understated. To honor JJ's legacy, a year after his passing, Clapton gathered a group of like-minded friends and musicians for Eric Clapton & Friends - The Breeze (An Appreciation of JJ Cale). With performances by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White, the album features 16 beloved JJ Cale songs and is named for the 1972 single "Call Me The Breeze".

Two artists had an enormous impact on Eric Clapton's music in the '70s: Delaney & Bonnie and J.J. Cale. Clapton joined Delaney & Bonnie's backing band after Cream dissolved, an experience that helped him ease away from the bombast of the power trio and into the blend of soul, blues, pop, and rock that defined his solo sound. Delaney Bramlett helped steer Clapton's eponymous 1970 solo debut, which not only came very close to replicating the sound of Delaney & Bonnie's records from that time, but also had a rollicking version of J.J. Cale's "After Midnight" that was Clapton's first solo hit.

This DVD is a must for any true JJ Cale fan. It contains almost 90 minutes of songs and even a personal look at JJ's modified Harmony guitar, complete with coins to set the distance between the strings and the neck.
He jams in classic laidback style and Leon Russell adds some tasty organ and even vocals on a couple tracks.
As good as any JJ I've heard, and I have them all. He's really in top form for this set and seeing him play with a great band adds to the full effect. The video is well edited and the camera work on a whole is pretty good.

This is a wonderful example of an almost forgotten studio session with a couple of greats - J. J. Cale and Leon Russell. If you are looking for some wonderful music and some inspired guitar playing, J. J. will deliver. If you are looking for some classic piano and organ playing by Leon, this is the CD to grab. The music is inspired and hot. I only wish that Eric Clapton could have been part of this session. But hey, for that we have "The Road to Escondido" to hear EC and JJ jam like crazy.
