Bad DNA, Marty Friedman's 2010 offering, is a hard one to place in the discography of the great Marty Friedman. I bought it on impulse again, buying it the day it came out in Japan. It seems he took the experimental electronic influences scattered scarcely across his post-Megadeth albums (think Cheer Girl Rampage) and incorporated them further into his guitar-driver music. In addition, the liner notes say that title track Bad DNA, Weapons of Ecstasy, and Glorious Accident are written by Friedman, Matsuura. I suspect it involves Takeomi Matsuura, who does some sequencing work on this album too and not the well-known Japanese pop singer Aya Matsuura. Anyway, on to the content!

Pianist Don Friedman first collaborated with Hungarian guitarist Attila Zoller as part of Herbie Mann's 1964-66 rhythm section. But the pair first explored the depths of their musical relationship in this excellent and aptly titled quartet session. Recorded in 1964, the same year Zoller won Down Beat's Talent Deserving Wider Recognition award, Dreams and Explorations is a challenging, evocative program of creative, improvised music that is never as predictable as traditional bop nor as ponderous, pretentious or piercing as free jazz.

I already knew most of the theory in this vid, but it was interesting to see Friedman's level of knowledge. Anyone who thinks this vid is boring should put down their guitar and shut the up because i was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Yes, this is universal theory, but it is important to all styles and important to overall musicianship. No, this may not share the same experience as watching Becker shred his off, but it provides knwowledge that any aspiring musician should definetely pickup on, if they already havn't. Great for beginners and intermediate players, in my opinion.

Reissue with the latest remastering and the original cover artwork. Comes with a description written in Japanese. The togetherness here comes from great interplay between the piano of Don Friedman and guitar of Klaus Flenter – two players who work surprisingly well on the record, and each seem to bring out the best in each other! Freidman's tones on the piano have this extra-chromatic approach, which is really echoed in the guitar at times – often in the album's more dynamic moments, which have a vibe that's quite different than Don's regular trio outings. The rest of the group features Henk Haverhoek on bass and Eric Ineke on drums – and titles include "Vieux Roue", "Minor Ballad", "Autumn In Summer", "Lonely Evening", "Elba", "New Dawn", and "Mohonk Blues".

Reissue with the latest DSD remastering. A tremendous little album from pianist Don Friedman – a trio session, but one that's cut with a mixture of Fender Rhodes and electric bass, which gives the album a majestically soulful groove! Friedman's never sounded better, and the record is easily one of his best – with a sound that matches the best CTI sides of the time, colored by the freedoms of the Japanese recording scene of the 70s – territory that Don never hit this strongly again, and which makes the record a really unique outing, quite diferent than both his early work and later sides. The group features Lyn Christie on bass and Bill Goodwin on drums – and titles include "Paula's Wish", "Canvas On My Mind", "Lullaby For Lynne", "Hope For Tomorrow", and "A Place Within".

On Rios, Saluzzi plays with American bassist Anthony Cox and American vibist and arranger David Friedman, a musician who's run the gamut from Yoko Ono to Disney soundtracks. Together they play an assortment of tunes by members of the group, about half of them Saluzzi's, plus the one cover "My One and Only Love." The numbers are thoughtful but not flashy. Friedman's "Penta y Uno" is largely a deconstruction of bossa nova and tango, featuring percussion as well as vibes. Cox's "Jad" uses weird effects from the instruments and the occasional Arabic motif to build up to a subdued bop frenzy. Other tracks are more straight-ahead combinations of the primary instruments.
