The excellent cellist Ditta Rohmann plays cello arrangements of the exquisitely selected repertory from the early twentieth century in the company of her father, the pianist Imre Rohmann. Starting with core pieces of the cello literature through works which are challenging even for violinists, to all-time favorites we are offered a snapshot of the musical world of the last century with its varied but still coherent style. We can see both the performing and the creative qualities of the artists, since we can hear their own arrangements in the recording.

Musical literalists may not be pleased with Colin Matthews' free orchestral arrangements of the 24 movements of Debussy's two books of Préludes pour le piano; this is certainly not the equivalent of Ravel's faithful orchestration of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Fans of impressionist orchestral music and some fans of the piano originals, though, may well experience a thrill, as if a lost Debussy orchestral piece had been rediscovered.

„In this new album, Cathy Krier takes an original step and goes entirely against the grain of her previous programmatic approach. In her two most recent CDs she had juxtaposed the apparently divergent styles of Rameau and Ligeti, or Liszt vs. Berg/Schoenberg, uncovering astounding new connections among them. The current release now takes the opposite path. At first glance, Claude Debussy – the inventor of musical Impressionism – and Karol Szymanowski – often called the ‘Polish Impressionist’ – would seem to have much in common.
