Label: A Banner Vision

Seven years after his last album, Southern hip-hop icon David Banner returns with a ferocious and timely takedown of the status quo. The God Box takes some of today’s most pressing issues—racism, misogyny, police brutality—and applies pressure. On “Magnolia,” the album’s gritty and growling opener, he recalls the tree’s horrifying connection to slavery, setting a mood so heavy, even Cee-Lo Green can’t lift it. But Banner wants listeners to feel the weight of these issues. “Who Want It” stomps on political corruption, and “Elvis” calls out, by name, white voices who have taken over black music (“Lord don’t take my heart/Lord don’t take my soul/Lord don’t let them take hip-hop like they took rock and roll”).

Chopin’s music had been absent from Fray’s active repertoire for some 15 years before he recorded this recital, which comprises seven of the composer’s nocturnes, three mazurkas, a polonaise, a waltz and an impromptu. When Fray talks about Chopin – who died in Paris in 1849 aged just 39, having exercised a transformative influence on the piano repertoire – it becomes clear that he sees the composer’s work in archetypally Romantic terms: “For me, Chopin’s music is very fragile, vaporous, perfumed … somewhat intangible. It is so fluid and evanescent – you need to feel that it could just disappear at any moment. What makes it so touching is this ephemeral quality – the mazurkas are like something that you write in the sand … You know that it will be washed away, but the memory will remain. His music palpitates with a sense of the unexpected, the inspiration of the moment. If you tried to engrave it into marble, it would die.”

In 1976 the newly-formed David Grisman Quintet recorded the first album of dawg music, an acoustic blend of many styles and traditions. Now forty years later that music continues to evolve with this first recording of the David Grisman Sextet. Many faces, hearts and hands have changed but the musical vision is still intact — the Dawg's own music.

The Edge: David Axelrod At Capitol Records 1966-1970 is a 2005 compilation album by producer/conductor David Axelrod. Released by Capitol Jazz, The Edge looks at part of his own discography while showing his contributions when he was the A&R for Capitol's Black music division by bringing in Lou Rawls, Letta Mbulu and others. His blend of orchestral jazz soul would become a sampling tool for countless hip-hop songs in the 1990's when producers dabbled in his output.
