Best of the modern cycles is certainly that under Barenboim, recorded at Bayreuth in the early 1990, with a fine cast and idiosyncratic but forceful conducting. Several of the leading singers were trained by Goodall, and it shows. And if you want sound of stunning depth and fullness, this and the Testament cycle are the ones to go for.

". . . here the VPO are attentive and flexible to every novel requirement, the winds a colourful and seductive joy. The 'live' recording does the dynamic range of the interpretation and the various unseen effects proud. This new set is . . . a major release . . ." (Mike Ashman, Gramophone)

The roles featured on this CD are, in more ways than one, truly great ones; the vocal and interpretational demands on the artist are of an equally high calibre. The fact, as J. M. Fischer writes in the booklet text, that the term 'heroic baritone' has established itself in connection with these roles is recognition of the highly technical challenges – and simultaneously an understatement. The parallels with Wagnerʼs 'heroic tenor roles' can be seen in the truly supreme vocal challenges, and yet the bass-baritone protagonistʼs role in each of these works also demands even greater control of the dramatic character and, therefore, a more complex musical approach. The enduring fascination of these demanding roles can also be sought in their 'tragic awareness'.

What a unique, miraculous merger, that of the universes, so contrasted and so complementary, of Richard Wagner (1813-1883) and Franz Liszt (1811-1886), whose thinking and oeuvre so marked the 19th century and who still fascinate us up to the present day. is century, which both crossed in such a singular way, constantly pushing back the limits of their chosen fields and linked by this same quest of the absolute through art: the former, upsetting the codes of opera by taking up with mythology and blending it with poetry, drama and philosophy; the latter, a pianist of extraordinary gifts, adulated by the masses and profoundly mystical.

It sounds as if Seattle-based trumpeter Cuong Vu is in the early stages of lining up the jazz guitar gods and recording and releasing an album with each. The year 2015 saw him offer up Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny (Nonesuch Records), and 2017 finds him bringing Bill Frisell into his orbit, with Ballet: The Music Of Michael Gibbs. These are two distinct guitar voices, joining in the crafting of two distinctly different sounds. The Metheny collaboration featured—like much of Vu's recorded output—a lot of electricity: a wired up trumpet, Metheny's guitar spewing tidal surges of electrons into a heavy sludge of bass and drums, resulting in a sonic density that seemed, at times, impenetrable. A sound so dense that, if you ran a Roomba at it, the little electro-machine's sensor might "detect" a wall; it might make the little vacuum cleaner do a hundred and eighty and go the other way.

Barenboim is an excellent Wagner conductor, and it's a pity his ongoing series of Wagner operas is often forced to make do with less than splendid voices. All the more reason, then, to enjoy this excellent disc of overtures and preludes, all of which are played to the hilt by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and recorded in sound of superb amplitude.
