Introduction to Modern Number Theory: Fundamental Problems, Ideas and Theories (Encyclopaedia of Mathematical Sciences) by Yu. I. Manin
English | 29 Aug. 2007 | ISBN: 3540203648 | 520 Pages | PDF | 2 MB

This edition has been called 'startlingly up-to-date', and in this corrected second printing you can be sure that it's even more contemporaneous. It surveys from a unified point of view both the modern state and the trends of continuing development in various branches of number theory.

Springer; 2nd edition | August 1, 1998 | English | ISBN: 038797329X | 394 pages | DJVU | 5 MB

This well-developed, accessible text details the historical development of the subject throughout. It also provides wide-ranging coverage of significant results with comparatively elementary proofs, some of them new. This second edition contains two new chapters that provide a complete proof of the Mordel-Weil theorem for elliptic curves over the rational numbers and an overview of recent progress on the arithmetic of elliptic curves.

"…The best surveys of mathematics are those written by deeply insightful mathematicians who are not afraid to infuse their ideas and insights into their outline of subject. This is what we have here, and the result is an essential book…" - Fernado Q. Gouvêa

The Two Jakes is the much-delayed and rather convoluted sequel to the 1975 classic Chinatown. Released in 1990 after an abortive stab at shooting that began in the mid-'80s, the film was the subject of a creative feud between its principals, star Jack Nicholson, producer Robert Evans, and screenwriter Robert Towne. Private eye Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson) is a middle-aged war hero, paunchy, snobbish about his golf game, and about to marry a lovely and much younger woman. Then a fleeting reference to a woman he once loved that he heard on a wire recording plunges him into a past he has tried to escape. It comes while he was spying on a philandering wife (Meg Tilly) and her paramour in her motel room for her husband, Jake Berman (Harvey Keitel). Then Berman shocks Gittes when he shoots his wife's lover.
