The music on this LP recalls the airy "Four Brothers" sound that tenor saxophonists Stan Getz, Zoot Sims and Herbie Steward, and baritone saxophonist Serge Charloff, plied in Woody Herman's band of 1947. For this outing, Steward and Charloff exit, and four become five with the addition of tenor luminaries Al Cohn, Brew Moore, and Allen Eager. The set appropriately kicks off with Gerry Mulligan's "Five Brothers," a tune reminiscent of Jimmy Giuffre's original "Four Brothers" in its fluid and bouncy arrangement. Three other attractive and similarly disposed originals (one more by Mulligan and two by Cohn) complete the saxophone session from 1949, all featuring swinging statements by each soloist. A 1952 sextet date led by Sims and Cohn is also included, offering up another round of original and buoyantly swinging cuts, bolstered by lively contributions from trombonist Kai Winding and solid rhythmic support by pianist George Wallington, bassist Percy Heath, and drummer Art Blakey. A fine release that nicely showcases the cool, proto-West Coast bop forged by both these soloists and Miles Davis.

Stan Getz Quartet Live in Paris is a live album by saxophonist Stan Getz which was recorded France in 1982 but not released on the French Dreyfus Jazz label until 1996. Joining Jack Teagarden’s big band at the age of 16, tenor saxophonist Stan Getz went on to forge a solo career marked by innovation, consistency, and even a few hits. While Getz was known in the jazz community as a player with a rounded, “cool” sound, he is best known for his bossa nova period of the early and mid 1960s, which included the hit “Girl from Ipanema”. His career also featured noteworthy collaborations with the likes of Bill Evans, Chick Corea, and Chet Baker.

Documenting Stan Kenton's always controversial but never sleepy music, the seven-CD Complete Capitol Studio Recordings of Stan Kenton 1943-47 features the orchestra at a time when it was reaching its greatest popularity, evolving from using the artist's charts into the Pete Rugolo era. In addition to some unreleased tracks, there are also several rare sessions included that were recorded at the time strictly for radio airplay. Most of Kenton's biggest hits ("Artistry in Rhythm," "Eager Beaver," "And Her Tears Flowed Like Wine," "Tampico," "Southern Scandal," "Artistry Jumps," "Intermission Riff," "Across the Alley From the Alamo," and "The Peanut Vendor") are here, as are many concert works. A classic reissue.

Live at Midem with Stan Getz, Paul Horn, Mike Garson, and Jazz Gala '80 are a continuation of a new tradition at Midem — a performance and recording of major jazz artists and the up and coming international jazz stars at the world record convention. Stan Getz traveled from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, taking leave from a gig at Bubba's and arrived in Cannes with his musicians: Andy Leverne, Brian Bromberg, Chuck Loeb, Victor Jones, on the morning of the 23rd of January '80. The show and recording session were that evening taped with a twenty-four track mobile unit from Paris. Paul Horn was in Cannes for Midem, having traveled from his home in Canada. Sugar Blue and Patrick Artero arrived the day before by train from Paris, and Gayle Moran, Joe Farrell and Mike Garson suffered a time differential of nine hours between the South of France and their homes in Los Angeles. The show's form and substance took shape at the rehearsel. Jean Claude Ast, the French assistant producer orchestrated the complex rehearsel schedule with musicians and technical people staying at dozens of hotels in Cannes.

One of Stan Getz's all-time greatest albums, Sweet Rain was his first major artistic coup after he closed the book on his bossa nova period, featuring an adventurous young group that pushed him to new heights in his solo statements. Pianist Chick Corea, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate were all schooled in '60s concepts of rhythm-section freedom, and their continually stimulating interplay helps open things up for Getz to embark on some long, soulful explorations (four of the five tracks are over seven minutes).

Three weeks after completing his meeting with Luiz Bonfá and only two days after the epochal Getz/Gilberto sessions, Stan Getz was back in the studio recording more bossa nova. Producer Creed Taylor was obviously striking while the iron was hot, getting in as many Brazilian sessions as he could, yet the quality of the music-making remained consistently marvelous.
