These two pieces were composed after the death of the guitarist Marcel Dadi who was on board the Boeing which exploded on July 16, 1996. Notes Indiscrètes is a sort of a tongue-in-cheek version of a theme by Marcel Dadi (Nous Trois). Tristemusette was written some days following the tragic accident, when the composer was still in a state of shock. Such circumstances, one might have thought, would have given birth to lugubrious and doleful music…

‘I’ve had the privilege of watching the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet transform over the years from a thrown-together student group at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester to a highly polished chamber ensemble consisting of mature, experienced and immensely talented players. This disc reveals their capacity to feel and shape music as one and it is a fantastic showcase for their incredible virtuosity. Although tied together by a common geography, there is so much variety in this collection of works as to guarantee many, many hours of wonderful listening.’ So Craig Ogden has written on the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet.

When Destry Rides Again, with music by Harold Rome, became a hit on Broadway, it was not a surprise that certain A&R men saw possibilities in producing jazz treatments of selections from this musical. Both Randy Weston and Sir Roland Hanna were prodded into doing albums of Rome's songs from the play, while Weston made a point to encourage Mosaic not to include it in a boxed set they compiled, Hanna passed away prior to this 2007 Wounded Bird reissue, so he didn't have a voice in the decision.

While little is known about Dario Castello (before 1600-1644), we are left with his Sonate concertate in stil moderno. This work by Castello, published in two books in 1621 and 1629 enjoyed great popularity, and were continually reprinted. Castello’s music is known for its virtuosic solos. The Musica Fiata performs these works with grandeur.

Jazz / Bop / Vibes

Other than a Bethlehem album in 1955 and a few obscure titles, all of vibraphonist Joe Roland's recordings as a leader are on this enjoyable CD reissue. Roland, best-known for an early '50s stint with George Shearing's Quintet, was a excellent vibist whose style fell somewhere between Terry Gibbs and Milt Jackson. He is paired in two 1954 quintets with either Freddie Redd (who plays conventional bop) and Wade Legge (sounding at his most eccentric) on piano. However the most memorable set is from 1950 for Roland is joined by guitar (Joe Puma), bass, drums and a string quartet. The writing for the strings (which is uncredited) is quite inventive and, although the strings do not solo, they sound very much like a jazz ensemble. It is particularly interesting to hear this instrumentation playing "Half Nelson," "Dee Dee's Dance" and Roland's original "Sally Is Gone"; guest singer Paula Castle does a fine job on the haunting "Love Is Just a Plaything." Recommended.
