It is a pleasure to see the rerelease of Paul Beier's first effort on the Baroque Lute, recorded in a small church in Switzerland nearly twenty years ago. He had originally planned a program that included the works presented here, plus the suite in E minor by Bach, but after editing we found that the total time of the recording was over 90 minutes, and so sacrificed the Bach suite to be able to release the CD (which can hold no more than 80 minutes worth of music).

Tonton Macoute was a progressive jazz/rock band formed in the UK in 1971 from the remaining 4 musicians of Windmill after the death of lead singer/guitarist Dick Scott in a road accident whilst on tour. Both bands were managed by Ken Howard and Alan Blaikely (Matthews Southern Comfort/The Herd/and Dave Dee Dozy Beaky Mick and Titch). The personnel consisted of Paul French-vox and keys, Dave Knowles- vox, sax and flute, Chris Gavin (Gavin Wilkinson)-guitar and bass, and Nigel Reveler-drums and percussion, Paul went on to form Voyager who charted in 1979 with a song entitled Halfway Hotel. They released 3 albums too, before disbanding in 1982. They have recently reformed to release the album Eyecontact…

Live at Midem with Stan Getz, Paul Horn, Mike Garson, and Jazz Gala '80 are a continuation of a new tradition at Midem — a performance and recording of major jazz artists and the up and coming international jazz stars at the world record convention. Stan Getz traveled from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, taking leave from a gig at Bubba's and arrived in Cannes with his musicians: Andy Leverne, Brian Bromberg, Chuck Loeb, Victor Jones, on the morning of the 23rd of January '80. The show and recording session were that evening taped with a twenty-four track mobile unit from Paris. Paul Horn was in Cannes for Midem, having traveled from his home in Canada. Sugar Blue and Patrick Artero arrived the day before by train from Paris, and Gayle Moran, Joe Farrell and Mike Garson suffered a time differential of nine hours between the South of France and their homes in Los Angeles. The show's form and substance took shape at the rehearsel. Jean Claude Ast, the French assistant producer orchestrated the complex rehearsel schedule with musicians and technical people staying at dozens of hotels in Cannes.

As the Paul Desmond/Jim Hall quartet's recording activities gradually came to a halt by 1965, RCA Victor assembled the remains of a number of their later sessions into one last album, adding two outtakes, "All Through the Night" and "Rude Old Man," when the album was transferred to CD in 1990. These are, however, anything but leftovers; indeed, they constitute the best Desmond/Hall album since Take Ten, more varied in texture and mood and by and large more inspired in solo content than Bossa Antigua and Glad to Be Unhappy. As a near-ideal example of this collaboration at its intuitive peak, "Polka Dots and Moonbeams" opens with Hall paraphrasing the tune, and Desmond comes in on the bridge with a perfectly timed rejoinder that sounds as if he's asking a question.

Recordings by solo lutenists have been numerous since the beginning of the 21st century. Cynics would say that in an era of declining government subvention it's cheaper to pay a single lutenist than an orchestra or choir, but it's also true that the lute repertory of the 17th and 18th centuries has historically been undervalued, left to a few specialists, despite the fact that court lutenists were some of the most celebrated and highly paid musicians of the time. This recording deals with a 1667 publication, Delitiae Testudinis (Delights of the Lute), by the little-known Esias Reusner, who was active in the German city of Brieg (now Brzeg, Poland).
