Free from the constraints of running a label, in January 2015 Collins confirmed that there would be an all-new Owl Service album released before the end of the year entitled His Pride. No Spear. No Friend. The third album was eventually released on 31 October 2015 and was something of a departure from previous Owl Service releases. According to Collins; "The album is mostly traditional songs, but the sound is far from traditional. It's a folk album in lyrical content only, not in sound". Ultimately, Collins' fierce anti-industry/pro-DIY stance would prove to be his downfall as the band flew below the radar of most people and the final album was both a critical and commercial failure, being met either with total indifference or worse; completely ignored. Collins himself likened the task of promoting His Pride. No Spear. No Friend. to "flogging a dead horse whilst banging my head against a brick wall".

The Owl Service launched in 2006, although Collins say he had been wanting to form a folk band since 1990, “ever since I discovered the first Fotheringay album. I didn’t know anyone who liked folk music then, and I didn’t even know much about folk music myself (still don’t really, if I’m being honest) – it all seemed quite alien to me.

The Owl Service was an English alternative folk music collective formed in 2006 by multi-instrumentalist Steven Collins (who led the band for its entire 10 year duration), named after the 1967 novel by Alan Garner. In 2011 the Owl Service put out on their own Rif Mountain label, ‘The Pattern Beneath the Plough Parts 1 and 2’, a compilation album which merges together ‘The View From the Hill’ with a recent EP, ‘The Burn Comes Down’, and some previously unreleased tracks.

The Owl Service was an English alternative folk music collective formed in 2006 by multi-instrumentalist Steven Collins (who led the band for its entire 10 year duration), named after the 1967 novel by Alan Garner. The Burn Comes Down is a very generous ep of mostly traditional songs bound together by the common thread of winter. Performing in a classic English folk-rock style, The Owl Service sound as if they must be regular visitors to 1970.

With a band name taken from a cult children’s novel of the late 60s, and a musical sound to match, the Owl Service’s Garland Sessions offers you 19 tracks of glorious nostalgia. This album is a re-working of a shorter one released as just 100 copies in 2007. On this version, the original tracks have been reworked and some more added.

Trevor Dunn's Trio-Convulsant is back for their second album, although with a completely different lineup (besides Dunn, of course). Adam Levy and Kenny Wollesen are gone, replaced by Mary Halvorson on guitar and Ches Smith on drums. The music they play is not so much a fusion of styles as it is a collision of styles. Almost straight-ahead jazz noodling gives way to hardcore blasts and crunching power chords, then completely devolves into Derek Bailey territory, but the band is always together. You can tell that some of it is quite composed, and that other sections are most likely entirely improvised.

Composers who venture into the realm of ‘world musics’ do so at their own peril, especially with such masters of musical worlds Toto La Momposina is from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart looking over their shoulders. Now include in that realm from Colombia to Austria, the traditions of music from Bulgaria, Hungary, and other parts of Europe, together with the African tradition, and with American art forms and you have quite a mountain to climb.

“I felt that it was time for me to tackle on this theme of Standards. Each and every established Jazz artist must at one point of his career record a “Standards” Album. It is an homage to the tradition and a proof of his improvisational accomplishments. I accepted this challenge and took the titles of famous Jazz Standard compositions and translated them into my interpretation of what the Standards of today in Jazz should be. For me “Normas” is the documented sounds of a musician’s pilgrimage through our planet, interpreting it’s mysteries with sound.”
