Emerging from the fertile background of Bohemian nationalism, Vitĕzslav Novak’s music achieved cult status in his homeland for its richness of melody and full-blown romantic orchestral colour. The lush timbres and monumental solemnity of In the Tatra Mountains were inspired by the composer’s journeys in this magnificent region. Eternal Longing is based on a poem by Hans Christian Andersen, while the dramatic Lady Godiva Overture, complete with tolling bells at the finale, was written by Novak in two days and is considered one of his most powerful works.

This remarkable performance, recorded in 1980 and 1981, has never been bettered. Conductor Zdenek Kosler keeps the energy level very high while studiously avoiding overt sentimentality–but this is not to say that Vasek's problems do not evoke pathos. The purely orchestral sections–the overture and dances–are brilliantly played, almost as virtuoso set-pieces, but elsewhere the singers play off one another in a naturally operatic way… Robert Levine, ClassicsToday.com

Kalman Balogh is one the foremost Hungarian players of the cimbalom, a type of hammer dulcimer played with mallets like a vibraphone. Gypsy jazz continues a fabled European musical tradition harking back to the collaboration of masters such as gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and violinist Stephane Grappelli, connecting the ancient folk music traditions to Central and Eastern Europe with the chord progressions and swing of jazz.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Janáček’s birth, this Decca Collector Edition brings together most of the composer’s chamber works and solo pieces plus his most popular orchestral works and the magnificent Glagolitic Mass in a superb digital recording with Riccardo Chailly and Wiener Philharmoniker. The recordings of the solo works and chamber pieces feature one of the world’s most distinguished ensembles: the London Sinfonietta and David Atherton. Their recordings were originally released as a 5-LP set in 1981 and many of these performances have not been available for several years; many also make their first international appearance on CD. This set provides the listener with all the essential non-operatic Janáček in one convenient collection.

The late Hans Keller regarded Hindemith as one of the few composers able to produce what he called 'intrinsic' quartets, that's to say quartets addressed in the first place to the player (the listener being, as Keller put it, "a more or less welcome eavesdropper"). This collection includes the recently re-discovered early work in C major. The performances are technically and musically excellent. As a previous reviewer has noted, there is much to be said for listening to them in the order in which they were composed, so as to follow the development of Hindemith's style over a period of three decades.

This box set delivers both a little more and a little less than it promises – though the packaging is so cryptic that it's difficult to say precisely what it does promise. Billed as The Pye Album Collection, it contains ten nicely packaged mini-LP sleeves (each with an appropriate inner sleeve to protect the CD – are you listening, Sony Classical, Rhino Handmade, and Hip-O Select?) representing the group's ten original albums for Pye Records.

Brilliant Classics | 2008 | 40 CD | 41 RAR | 3.52 Gb
Lame encoded | MP3 VBR V2 | Tracks | Covers

This whopping 40-disc set, which sells for very little, contains familiar performances of the major works, and most of them are quite good. As an overview of Dvorak's complete works, this is entirely honorable, and it needs to be viewed whole. Naturally you can do better in individual works, but if you want to know what the composer was all about and don't want to spend a fortune finding out, this is quite a deal.
