Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s two Piano Concertos form a contrasting pair. Concerto No 1, written in 1927, is a vivid and witty example of his romantic spirit, exquisite melodies and rich yet transparent orchestration. Concerto No 2, composed a decade later, is a darker, more dramatic and virtuosic work. The deeply-felt and dreamlike slow movement and passionate finale are tinged with bleak moments of sombre agitation, suggestive of unfolding tragic events with the imminent introduction of the Fascist Racial Laws that led Castelnuovo-Tedesco to seek exile in the USA in 1939. The Four Dances from ‘Love’s Labour’s Lost’, part of the composer’s recurring fascination for the art of Shakespeare, are atmospheric, richly characterised and hugely enjoyable. This is their first performance and recording.

The Violin Concerto No. 2 ("The Prophets") by Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco is rarely played, and the Concerto Italiano of 1924 here receives its world premiere on recordings. Chinese violinist Tianwa Yang makes a good case that both should be heard more often. Castelnuovo-Tedesco termed the Concerto Italiano "almost Vivaldian," largely on the strength of the crystalline middle movement; the first movement is a big piece of Romantic heroics.

“… these Caprichos are an exhaustive workout for guitar. Frank Bungarten was awarded the first prize in the International Guitar Competition in Granada, Spain, by Segovia himself. His playing is very clean and clear … One must remark, too, upon the quality of the recording.“ (Fanfare)

This recording brings together the first major four-movement sonatas for guitar dating to the twentieth century. The collocation of works sharing in the sonata form brings the very different personal styles of the three composers into clear focus.

Frank Bungarten was born in Cologne in 1958 and today numbers among the most highly regarded concert guitarists of the younger generation.

Italian pianist Alfonso Soldano presents solo piano works by his 20th-century compatriot Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. Primarily known for his guitar compositions and his Hollywood film scores, Castelnuovo-Tedesco also composed a rich body of piano pieces primarily in a lyrical and lush vein, though there are hints of harmonically adventurous modernism as can be heard in the charming Sonatina zoologica, whose movements are named after small creatures. Soldano performs all of these works, some of which are world premiere recordings, with virtuosity and an admirable intensity.

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco (1895-1968) would write two piano quintets during the course of his career. The first, with its baroque eclecticisms, is indicative of his characteristic film music, with its pathos and capacity for creating scenic spaces. The Second Quintet, composed in Beverly Hills in 1951 and counted as his op.155, is entitled Memories of the Tuscan Countryside. The work is one of cheerful, contemplative serenity, and might be understood as a quiet meditation on nostalgic yearning for his native Italy.

This is the fourth volume on Brilliant Classics of the vibrantly cosmopolitan music of the Jewish-Italian, US composer Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. His heritage is reflected in this substantial song-cycle for soprano and guitar, receiving here only its second modern recording. The Divan of Moses Ibn Ezra is a setting of 19 poems, in a modern English translation, by a medieval Spanish Jew who wrote, like Castelnuovo-Tedesco almost a millennium later, in exile.

Florentine composer Castelnuovo‐Tedesco contributed a vast array of music to the guitar literature, and this engaging release celebrates his output for two guitars, drawing focus to what is perhaps the repertoire’s most awe‐inspiring collection: the cycle of 24 preludes and fugues known as Les guitares bien tempérées. The unique nature of this work lies in the composer’s great ability to use ‘raw’ materials, polishing them with an almost unparalleled skill to create small, perfect and autonomous scenes that draw on light and extremely effective use of counterpoint; appending them is the Fuga elegiaca, a work that functions as the perfect conclusion on account of its original key of G minor, the same key in which the series opens.
