Disco, Funk

It took us one year to finally come back with VOLUME 2 of TOO SLOW TO DISCO. This time we dug even deeper into the sundrenched, relaxed-funky, smooth and megalomaniac Westcoast-sound of the late 70s / early 80s: from Singer/Songwriter-Funk, Yacht-Pop, Blue Eyed Soul to AOR-Disco. Tracks somewhere between delusion of grandeur and a mountain of Soul.

A little gem from the late 70's by this LA based keyboards player and generally reckoned to be his best, well worth hunting down. Jungle Fever features the likes of Buzz Feiten (guitar), Willie Weeks (bass), Andy Newmark (drums), Mike Brecker (tenor sax), Larry Williams (alto sax and flute), Ralph McDonald (percussion) and Jerry Hey (trumpet & flugelhorn). The whole set is original Larsen material except for a quite acceptable cover of Gato Barbieri's 'Last Tango in Paris'. Not a vocal in sight, either. Recorded and mixed by Al Schmitt at Sound Labs and Capitol Recording Studios in Hollywood and produced by maestro Tommy LiPuma. Engineer and producer teams don't get much better than that and, on this album, it certainly shows.

Although Dave Weckl is an excellent drummer, not all of his recordings have been excellent. In the 1990s, you never knew if you would find something exciting or mundane on a Weckl album. But this fusion/soul-jazz disc turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Synergy, in fact, is the drummer's most consistently satisfying CD. Excessive producing was a major problem on some of his previous releases, but this time he generally avoids overproducing and goes for a real band sound. Joined by tenor and soprano saxman Brandon Fields, keyboardist Jay Oliver, guitarist Buzz Feiten, and electric bassist Tom Kennedy, Weckl has a solid team to work with and emphasizes improvisation and honest-to-God playing not high-tech studio gloss.

Long before Blues Traveller, there was this band called The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, led by the vocal & harmonica talents of Paul Butterfield. Many aspiring blues and rock musicians passed through Butterfield's band throughout the 1960's & 1970's and went on to greater fame, Mike Bloomfield being one of the most famous. Here on this 1978 concert DVD, recorded for the Rockpalast German TV show in Essen at the Grugahalle, Butterfield and his 'non' blues band rip it up on an all too short 45 minute set that incorporates blues and funk into a hard rockin' set of covers and originals.

Bongo Rock is a 2006 compilation CD by The Incredible Bongo Band. Started by Michael Viner, his albums were nothing more than cover versions of well known songs along with a few original pieces, all complimented by someone playing mean bongo rhythms over it. Normally, it would be a weird part of thrift store ephemera but that was it. However, their cover of "Apache" would become a very important staple in the early movement of what we now know as hip-hop due to the drum break, which moved a lot of people in clubs and basketball courts to breakdance. Others discovered songs on their albums were just as funky.
