Katatonia have achieved legendary status in the realm of Swedish metal, with an evolution not dissimilar to English counterparts Anathema and Paradise Lost. One element that has remained intact throughout their various transformations is their masterful use of atmosphere, even if the compositional component has been largely streamlined by now. "The Fall of Hearts" is thankfully a largely adventurous offering, moreso than anything the band has recorded in many years. This latest by the morose quintet features plenty of surprising songwriting choices, including some of the their most bold musical explorations in quite some time…

Running on Empty is the fifth album by American singer-songwriter Jackson Browne. Released in 1977, the album reached #3 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart in 1978 and stayed on the charts for 65 weeks. The single for the title track, "Running on Empty", peaked at #11 and the follow-up single, "The Load-Out"/"Stay", reached #11 on the Billboard Pop Singles chart. The song "Running on Empty" was included in the film Forrest Gump. On November 15, 2005, Elektra/Rhino issued a remastered version with the following additional tracks: 11. "Cocaine Again" and 12. "Edwardsville Room 124" on Disc 2 of the package, which is a DVD Audio version of the album's track lineup that features a 5.1 surround sound mix, among other bonus items, such as video montages and lyrics. Disc 1 is a remaster of the original album's song list only. The remaster is missing the first 25 seconds of audience ambience that, on all other previous editions of the album, led into the beginning of the album's title track. For reasons unknown, this snippet, which included the sounds of the musicians' count into the song's opening, was edited out on this version, though curiously the Disc 2 DVD Audio version includes the 25 seconds missing on Disc 1.

A selection of highlights from Ringo's latter-day albums for Koch, 5.1: The Surround Sound Collection is designed as a sampler for audiophiles and it should please most of that crowd. This concentrates not on his steady stream of live recordings but rather his strong latter-day solo albums – records that draw heavily from the lush sound of latter-day Beatles, so they lend themselves well to being opened up via Surround Sound…

Universal Records is about to uncork a reissue campaign on November 21 that will give Rush fans a few more 5.1 digital surround sound reboots of albums from the band's classic Mercury Records catalog. The "Sector" Rush reissues will collect all 15 Mercury-era Rush releases in three separate sets, each containing five albums, with a total of 18 discs overall. All of the albums have been freshly remastered and formatted with packaging that mimics the original vinyl LP. Additionally, updated booklets for each release will contain previously unseen photographs along with the original credits and album lyrics. The real meat of these new reissues though will be the brand new 5.1 versions of three signature Rush albums - "Fly By Night", "A Farewell To Kings", and "Signals". There's one hitch, though - the three new releases will be divided up as bonus DVD discs, packaged one per volume across the three volumes of "Sector" reissues.

The band's follow-up still finds it working very much in the vein of orchestral rock, largely driven by Stewart Wooly Wolstenholme's keyboards and the presence of the London Symphony Orchestra. The reach of the music exceeds the grasp of the lyrics, though - they lack the cold oracularity of Peter Sinfield or the allusive cleverness of Peter Gabriel. Still, there's some fine compositions here. "She Said" turns upon a keening opening Mellotron riff to develop into a slow-four dirge. "Song for Dying" shows off the band's fine ability at vocal harmonies, while the later concert standard, "Mocking Bird," shows a dramatic evolution from pensive acoustic guitar to a full-blown orchestral attack. Unique. That is the way we can describe Emma Shapplin's "Etterna". The singer reflects her inner growth by delecting us with melodies that go far beyond imagination. Her style can only be compared to Sarah Brightman's "Eden" but Shapplin's voice is sweeter and much more dramatic. Pieces like "Leonora" and "La Silente Riva" reflect that wonderful fascination that Ms. Shapplin shows for barroque Italian, with all of it's dramatism and melancholy. In the the other hand "La Notte Etterna" and "Celtica" make the listener go through different stages of their inner soul, learning about their own way of approaching that elven and magical creature who sings.

This audio/video DVD contains 11 songs encoded as 5.1 and stereo – options accessible from the DVD menu, with interactive lyrics in both English and Italian, as well as Emma's video interview, and some other nice extras.
