John Coltrane and Eric Dolphy played and recorded together on many occasions. However, given the quality of their music and the high level of creativity involved in every single one of their performances, all new additions are always welcome. In this case, we present a previously unissued concert recorded from a radio broadcast in Helsinki in 1961, during the European tour in which Dolphy joined Trane's legendary quartet. The Helsinki performance showcases both Coltrane and Dolphy's musical explorations in search of new ways to express themselves.

This is a great record, with one important caveat – anyone looking for the Donovan of AM radio and upbeat ditties like "Sunshine Superman" will have to go for more recent live albums. Donovan in Concert has been neglected over the decades by the fans, who apparently would have preferred a set that encompassed the hits, yet it presents a surprisingly vital side of Donovan's music, as well as excellent versions of some of his best album cuts and good versions of the two actual hits that are here. In contrast to his studio sides, which often reflected the sensibilities of producer Mickie Most more than those of Donovan, the live material here, cut at the Anaheim Convention Center in early 1968, features Donovan doing his music, his way…

One Way… Or Another (1971) was the second studio outing to feature the incipient incarnation of supergroup Cactus, comprised of Vanilla Fudge rhythm section Carmine Appice (drums) and Tim Bogert (bass), as well as former Amboy Dukes lead vocalist Rusty Day (vocals/mouth harp), and Jim McCarty (guitar) from Mitch Ryder & the Detroit Wheels and the Buddy Miles Express. Even as their debut was ostensibly rawer, they retained the same amp'ed-up electric blues reminiscent of early Grand Funk Railroad and Foghat…

Jordi Savall's exemplary performance of Handel's Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks is among the finest available on disc: refined and precise, but very big, with blood-stirring grandeur. This is just the kind of extroverted, rousing presentation that best highlights the music's open-air ceremonial function. Savall's Le Concert des Nations is essentially a chamber orchestra with double or triple winds, but the sound he elicits from the group is majestic and surprisingly powerful. The playing is crisp and the rhythmic articulation bracing, but the sound is never brash. In fact, more often than not it is seductively sensual, a heady integration of precision and supple, shapely phrasing. Handel left no authoritative edition of the score of Water Music and it has traditionally been divided into three suites, but Savall reorders the material into two suites, a decision that makes more sense in terms of key relationships and that sounds entirely satisfying.

This was the first European album by the four Guinean musicians known as Africa Djolé. Playing an enormous assortment of drums, hollowed gourds, whistles, broken saw blades, and woodblocks, as well as a harmonica and their voices, this quartet led by African master drummer Fode Youla took their show to Berlin's Free Music Workshop in 1978 and took the whole joint by storm. And while it's true that the album's listeners can't see them dancing and moving along with their music, the sense of that movement is fully evident in the rise and fall, call and response, and continuous juxtaposition of one set of rhythms against or in concert with another.

Subterranea: The Concert is exactly what the title says: a complete live rendition of IQ's masterpiece Subterranea. The track list is exactly the same as the studio album (there is not even an extra encore). Following Subterranea's release in September 1997, one question immediately arose: It's a fantastic album, but can the guys pull it off live? This document proves without a doubt they did. Actually, IQ performed the work a few times in 1998 and 1999, turning it into a full-fledged stage production with light show, projections, and an actor, getting very close to Genesis' historical production of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway in 1974-1975 (minus the outrageous costumes)…

THE JEFF POCARO TRIBUTE CONCERT - The Classic Tribute Concert From 1992 To The Late Toto Drummer Jeff Porcaro, legendary session drummer and Toto skinsman for many years, died unexpectedly of a heart attack on 5th August 1992 at his home in Southern California. On 14th December the same year, Jeff s surviving band mates (which included his brothers Jeff and Mike Porcaro, Mike passed on in 2015) performed at the Universal Amphitheatre in Los Angeles alongside a host of music giants who had gathered to pay their respects to the talent, versatility and downright human decency of a man who had performed alongside the great and the good during his career, which had been so sadly cut short while the master musician was in his prime.
