Fantastic! This is one of Sonny Criss' masterworks, and an amazing tribute to the LA jazz underground of the 60's. Horace Tapscott composed and arranged all of the tracks on here, and they form a beautiful, soulful, suite that gives Criss a perfect backdrop for his meaningful solos. The work is fantastic, and every moment falls perfectly in line. Haunting stuff that we never tire of listening to, and which we can't recommend highly enough!
In the summer of 1991 Gerry Mulligan decided to revisit Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool recordings. He discussed it with Miles Davis himself who said he might be interested in participating but sadly Davis died a few months later. With Wallace Roney (the perfect sound-alike) in the trumpeter's place, baritonist Mulligan got the band's original pianist and tuba player (John Lewis and Bill Barber), used his own bassist (Dean Johnson) and drummer (Ron Vincent), and found able substitutes in altoist Phil Woods (unfortunately Lee Konitz was unavailable to play his old parts), trombonist Dave Bargeron and John Clark on French horn.
The Atomic Fireballs were formed in Detroit in 1996 by John Bunkley and James Bostek. The two of them met when Bostek's wife was working with Bunkley and introduced them. Although the group plays their own brand of high-energy swing music, they list their influences to be as far ranging as Louis Jordan and Black Flag. The lineup of the group is Bostek on trumpet, Bunkley on vocals, Tony Buccilli playing trombone, Duke Kingins on guitar, Shawn Scaggs on double bass, Eric Schabo wailing tenor sax, and Randy Sly on piano. Their first album was the self-released Birth of the Swerve (1998). The album was good enough to garner the interest of major labels. That meant that the follow-up, 1999's Torch This Place, was not an independent release but rather on Atlantic.
This album is probably one of the most unusual and yet inspiring albums ever released. Unusual, because although being released in 2002, the music on this album was actually composed twenty years previous. CD Album published in 2001 in one of the many reissues that has seen this singular work of the great Miles Davis. First saw the light in 1954 with 8 subjects; with 11 subjects was reissued in 1957 and added the last from 1971. The '50s brought a new style to jazz, 'cool', but breaking-twinned with the 'bebop' in decline-from the happy collaboration of the brilliant trumpeter Miles Davis and the composer Gil Evans. The roots of this music are included on this disc recorded in three different sessions between 1949 and 1950. The play made a deep impression among music critics and was a fresh and innovative deep milestone in jazz music. Davis and a group of nine musicians under his command were responsible for laying the foundations of this new concept of 'cool' jazz.
