They come in a double thick Jewel Box on 4 CDs. All the albums been digitally remastered and enhanced for superior quality and the Real Gone Jazz label has garnered some really good reviews for sound quality. The digitally enhanced sound is a good indicator. A mumber of lush orchestral numbers a la Nat King Cole but oh well. They are good too. These are from 1960-61. Half of the fourth disc is composed of duets with Betty Carter. Disc 2 is all piano plus instrumentals, with Milt Jackson on the first half.

It took Edmond Hall a long period to develop his own musical individuality, but by the early '40s he had a very distinctive and dirty sound on the clarinet that was immediately recognizable within one note. One of four clarinet playing brothers (including Herbie Hall) who were the sons of early clarinetist Edward Hall, Edmond worked in many bands in New Orleans (including Buddy Petit's during 1921-1923) before going to New York in 1928 with Alonzo Ross. He was with Claude Hopkins' orchestra (1929-1935), doubling on baritone and only occasionally sounding like his future self on clarinet. Hall played with Lucky Millinder, Zutty Singleton, and Joe Sullivan, and had his style together by the time he joined Red Allen in 1940.

AVID Jazz here presents four classic Mel Powell plus albums plus including original LP liner notes on a finely re-mastered and low priced double CD. 'Borderline'; 'Thigamagig'; 'Mel Powell Out On A Limb'; 'Bandstand'; All the jazz tracks from 'Mel Powell Septet' and the E.P. 'Classics In Jazz.' Early 1950's recordings from pianist Mel Powell….'one of the first musicians to make the transition from swing to serious composition without losing his mastery of either idiom'. An extremely busy musician, composer and arranger Powell was a mere sixteen years old when he replaced Teddy Wilson in the Benny Goodman Band during the early forties. For two years his piano playing and arranging dominated the Goodman band until he was drafted in 1943 and became a member of the Glenn Miller Air Force Band. After Millers death in 1945 Powell became the band leader and chief arranger. He then went on to study composition at Yale University removing himself almost entirely from the jazz scene (with the occasional exception of the odd gig with Goodman). But now he's back!

AVID Jazz continues with its Four Classic album series with a re-mastered 2CD release from Bobby Jaspar, complete with original artwork and liner notes. 'Bobby Jaspar All Stars'; 'Tenor & Flute'; 'Interplay for 2 Trumpets and 2 Tenors' plus the .E.P. 'Bobby Jaspar & Sacha Distel' and two tracks from Chet Baker 'I Got Chet'. Don't be fooled into thinking tenor saxophonist and flautist Bobby Jaspar was in the second league of jazz because he was born in Liege, Belgium! Don't forget this is the country that gave us Jacques Brel, Poirot and Tin Tin! And if you still don't believe us just take a look at some of the musicians playing alongside Bobby on our four fine selections: John Coltrane, Chet Baker, Elvin Jones, Mal Waldron, Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, Art Taylor, George Wallington and Sacha Distel (don't panic, he's playing superb jazz guitar, not singing!) And if these albums impress you, watch out for another couple of Bobby Jaspar performances on our forthcoming second Herbie Mann release.

Jazz / Easy Listening / Stage & Screen / Light Jazz / Soundtrack

This set contains eight Henry Manicini albums, all from his jazz period. Six of these albums were soundtracks written for either television series or for movies. All of the albums, except Hatari, contain twelve tracks. The album identifications and track listings for each CD appear below. The sound quality of this set is fantastic. Mancini recorded over 90 albums, in styles including big band, jazz, light classical and pop. Eight of these albums were certified gold by The Recording Industry Association of America. He had a 20-year contract with RCA Records, resulting in 60 commercial record albums that made him a household name among artists of easy-listening music. Mancini's earliest recordings in the 1950s and early 1960s were of the jazz idiom; with the success of Peter Gunn, Mr. Lucky, and Breakfast at Tiffany's, (all included here)Mancini shifted to primarily recording his own music in record albums and film soundtracks.

Jazz / Soul / Rhythm & Blues / Gospel / Funk / Blues

Collecting the albums the soul singer made as he transitioned from gospel to the world of secular music, Eight Classic Albums gathers up a massive collection of both albums and singles of the great Sam Cooke. Featuring his work between 1957 and 1960, this four-disc set contains Sam Cooke, Encore, Tribute to the Lady, Hit Kit, I Thank God, Cooke's Tour, Hits of the Fifties, and Swing Low. The compilation doesn't contain much in the way of liner notes or supplemental material, so while it makes for a great Sam Cooke starter kit, it doesn't provide much in the way of extra information.
