Rosamund Stacey (Sandy Dennis), a young 'bookish' girl in London society, spends her days studying for a doctorate in the British Museum and her nights avoiding the sexual attention of the men in her life. But one day, all that changes. Through a friend, she is introduced to rising TV newsreader/announcer George Matthews (Ian McKellen) and after a further chance meeting and a tumble on the sofa, she finds herself pregnant from her first sexual encounter. A failed attempt at self-abortion just re-inforces Rosamund's resolve to have the child - leaving her on a solitary and at times dismal path through pregnancy and into motherhood, aided only by close friend Lydia (Eleanor Bron). Will she get through it? Will her child? And will she let Matthews know that he is actually the father?

The story of Vaya Con Dios (a Spanish phrase which means "go with god") started in 1986. The group was formed by Dani Klein, Dirk Schoufs (bass from the rockabilly group The Wild Ones) and Willy Lambregt (guitar player for the Scabs). Their first release, the single "Just a friend of mine" characterizes the group with its love for Spanish-influenced music and acoustic instruments. It becomes an overnight hit (300.000 sold copies in France) and their career is on the way.

Everyone and their uncles were busy cranking out Ellington albums in 1999 – usually with the same imaginative titles ("A Tribute, "Our Tribute, " etc., etc.) – but this anthology has quite a few individual coups that stand out from the pack.

Killer work from the same sessions that gave the world Cannonball Adderley's classic Black Messiah album – live material from an extended stretch as the Troubadour club in LA – featuring a very righteous, freewheeling version of Cannonball's group! The lineup features some wonderful work on Fender Rhodes from George Duke – who brings a more soulful, spiritual current to the proceedings than Joe Zawinul did in earlier years – a really commanding presence that hints at his brewing solo fame, and which is a very welcome addition to the core lineup, which also includes Cannon on soprano and alto, and brother Nat on cornet!

Freedom can take you to some strange places. Just ask New Jersey prog rock outfit Thank You Scientist, who approached their new album, Stranger Heads Prevail, by throwing out expectations and anything else that might handcuff their creativity. According to the band’s guitarist and primary songwriter Tom Monda, their breakthrough debut Maps of Non-Existent Places afforded them this luxury. “We had no expectations, no audience to target. We wrote whatever we felt,” he says. “When that record succeeded critically and commercially, it was a big ‘fuck you’ to anyone who didn’t see value in our band.”
