Here's a template for a 4-issue miniseries: Take a space ship--call it Savannah--on its voyage home with an all-women crew. All pretty women, with abnormally, unrealistically large bosoms and curvaceaous figures clad in skintight suits. Then, present a cool, clever bit of sci-fi problem for the crew to run into and solve each issue, such as... well, inter-dimensional beings, aggressive aliens, jungle planets that dissolve their spacesuits, and the like. And what have you got? Oh yeah, there are always those curmudgeons who'd grumble and gripe that this is just another shallow, sexually exploitative comic book. The only thing is that with writers Frank Cho and Doug Murray, 50 Girls 50 is anything but shallow, not to mention that there is nothing sexual at all in this miniseries as there are no males in the story nor is there any hint of romantic involvement among the women. What it is, is a fun, terrific series that does not suffer from any letdown. It is also a very pretty comic book, what with artist Axel Medellin whose skinsuit seam designs have a way of accentuating the curves and giving these women a stronger sense of energy, motion and depth than you’d normally expect--and I say that with all seriousness. So if you'd much rather look at pictures of muscular men in skintight outfits than of brainy, pretty women in skintight outfits in a series that delivers on the storyline aspect, skip this download and go on to the next post. By the way did I mention that all four issues are high-quality Minutemen scans?

reunites the team of Dethan, Cook and Wilkinson, joined this time around by penciller Rob Carey on his first full-length graphic novel. Publisher Harry Markos, speaking about the launch on the PSN forum, said: “You’re going to be freaked out. I warned you, a while ago, that The Indifference Engine would blow your minds...” Certainly this 4-issue graphic novel, published online as a digital comic mini-series, packs a lot of punches. Cy Dethan's script is tight, seamless, and progressive with no decompression as is common among comics mini-series nowadays, and that says a lot about the creative process that went into it. Carey's art, too, is excellent--never drawing too much attention to itself yet pulling the reader deeper into the story--with granularity, starkness and tension in all the right places. Markosia should be proud to showcase such British talent, showing that great things are ahead. This is also a coup for the PSP Comics network and what mobile comics are all about. Highly recommended. 12+

John Rozum resurrects his Milestone Xombi that ran for 22 issues in the mid-90's, bringing back protagonist and weird magnet David Kim. The original Xombi was witty, oftentimes funny, with quirky, oddball characterizations. So it is with the new Xombi, aided in part by Frazer Irving's expressive artwork that's just perfect for Rozum's new penchant for dialogue-driven development. A winner, although chances are it will get caught in the DCU reboot, which is a pity. All Minutemen scans.

This 4-issue limited series where Doctor Strange again meets the dread Dormammu and published under the Marvel Knights imprint is notable for being the Master of the Mystic Arts' first limited series. It is also notable for being co-written (with writer Dan Jolley), drawn and penciled, including covers, by multi-Eisner Award nominee Tony Harris (). Harris imparts Doctor Strange with a rather dark, sinister air--the character is, after all, a sorcerer--but I still like Steve Ditko's and Gene Colan's work more.
