After two stunning jazz piano trio recordings featuring the music of Dylan and Zorn, dubmeister Jamie Saft returns to his roots with a masterpiece of Jewish heavy metal. Slashing and burning his way through nine tracks of unbridled madness, this is Radical Jewish Culture at its best. Alice Cooper, Black Sabbath and Slayer for the frum, Black Shabbis presents uncompromising and intense sounds from one of the most versatile creative lights in the downtown scene.

In the final months of 2004, John Zorn wrote over 300 new tunes for his popular Masada project, and he now initiates a new series of recordings featuring the best players out of the burgeoning Masada family in dynamic units performing compositions from Masada Book Two - The Book of Angels. This first volume features Jamie Saft in an acoustic piano trio reminiscent of the best in the genre.

This quartet was born from a conversation between Joe Morris and Jamie Saft about their mutual fascination with John Coltrane’s “Live at the Village Vanguard Again” album. From there they decided to develop a project under the influence of the music played by Coltrane with his wife Alice Coltrane, Jimmy Garrison, Rashied Ali and a pair of guests, Pharoah Sanders and Emanuel Rahim. Right away they established that Morris would use a double bass, instead of his usual guitar, and that Saft would focus completely on acoustic piano, putting aside any electric and electronic keyboards.

While Jamie Saft has been a significant presence on previous RareNoise recordings by Slobber Pup, Plymouth and Metallic Taste of Blood, the renegade keyboardist and essential Downtown improviser steps into a dramatically different role on The New Standard. A collaborative trio outing featuring the dream rhythm tandem of drummer Bobby Previte and bassist Steve Swallow, both prolific composers and venerable bandleaders in their own right, it showcases Saft alternating between piano and organ and making thoughtful, melodic contributions throughout.

Musical jack-of-all-trades Jamie Saft is a mainstay of New York's downtown crowd, bringing to the proceedings a CV that takes in jazz instruction at the New England Conservatory of Music, stints as a pianist in two John Adams' operas, and latter-day work with both Bobby Previte's Latin for Travelers and Peter Epstein's quartet. Backed by a combo featuring guitar, percussion, vocals, and turntables, Saft commands the stage here as he plays myriad instruments on this, his second Tzadik release.

Borscht Belt Studies is Jamie Saft's first record on Tzadik since 2009's stellar Black Shabbis, a death metal meditation on the historical persecution and homelessness of the Jewish people. Obviously, Borscht Belt Studies is stylistically different. Saft returns to more familiar territory here, playing only piano and Fender Rhodes throughout. He is accompanied by Ben Goldberg's clarinet on six of 11 cuts, and by his current group, the New Zion Trio with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Craig Santiago, on one. Saft divides the album into musical sections that alternate by cut.
