In breathing new life into the symphony, sonata, and concerto, Sergey Prokofiev emerged as one of the truly original musical voices of the twentieth century. Bridging the worlds of pre-revolutionary Russia and the Stalinist Soviet Union, Prokofiev enjoyed a successful worldwide career as composer and pianist. As in the case of most other Soviet-era composers, his creative life and his music came to suffer under the duress of official Party strictures. Still, despite the detrimental personal and professional effects of such outside influences, Prokofiev continued until the end of his career to produce music marked by a singular skill, inventiveness, and élan. Piano superstar Evgeny Kissin's new Prokofiev album - with his first-ever recording of Piano Concerto No. 2! For his third EMI Classics release, piano legend Evgeny Kissin has turned to repertoire from his native Russia, Sergei Prokofiev's Piano Concertos Nos.2 & 3. The performances were recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall in January 2008 with Vladimir Ashkenazy conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra. This is Kissin's first recording of Prokofiev's Concerto No.2, and the collaboration here with Vladimir Ashkenazy is an inspired choice - in addition to his renown as a conductor, fellow-Russian-born Ashkenazy is one of the finest pianists of his generation and a champion of the Russian piano repertoire. These two great artists inspire each other to the heights of artistry, and these recordings prove it!

Chopin's two piano concertos have long been admired more as pianistic vehicles than as integrated works for piano and orchestra. But in his revelatory new recording, Krystian Zimerman suggests otherwise: The opening orchestral tuttis have so much more light, shade, orchestral color, and detail, you wonder if they've been rewritten. Every gesture, every instrumental solo is so specifically characterized that by the time the piano makes a dramatic entrance, the pieces have become operas without words.
