A seductive CD of the gifted Argentinian flamenco guitar player Alex Fox. His music has the style found in Ottmar Leibert, Armik, Oscar Lopez and many others representatives of the new age guitar. Still Alex Fox has this 'something' that makes his sound recognizable. And it is located in the emotions evoked by his music. That something that makes you understand that there is no way for Alex to record a 'bad' CD. Enjoy.

Fresh from opening up for Natalie Cole on her 1993 tour, Ottmar Liebert will begin his own tour with the spectacular new release The Hours Between Night and Day. Breaking new stylistic ground, Liebert combines the intimacy of acoustic guitar with electric musicianship mixed with light touches of computer-added harmonies. Spanish flamenco, the signature sound so strongly associated with Liebert and Luna Negra, is still easily heard on this new title, perhaps nowhere so apparent as on the Spanish language Marvin Gaye classic "Mercy Mercy Me….". Album nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.

Ottmar Liebert has said that "flamenco is a music both romantic and dangerous; it is an attitude as much as it is a musical genre." Therein lies the philosophy that catapulted him to fame at the end of the '80s with an engaging mix of subdued flamenco guitar and South American percussion, rock, jazz, and pop influences. Liebert's "attitude" actually suppresses the more challenging and "dangerous" aspects of flamenco in favor of the romantic – and the stylish. He's not a technical wizard on the guitar, but he has a feel for the music's innate sensuality and a gift for creating memorable melodies.

Ottmar Liebert has become one of the most successful instrumental artists of the past decade, thrilling audiences throughout the world and releasing a catalog of classic recordings, including the remix collection Euphoria (1995), the live album Viva! (1995), the double CD Opium (1996) and the classical-oriented orchestral album Leaning into the Night (1997). He wrapped up his decade with Epic with 2001’s Little Wing and went back to Higher Octave Music, releasing a lush album of lullabies called In the Arms of Love in 2002 and an album with Luna Negra XL called The Santa Fe Sessions (2003).

Ottmar Liebert's music bridges the gaps between flamenco, jazz, and world music. On this effort, he takes on classical forms as well, merging his styles with a symphony orchestra. The music includes pieces by Ravel, Satie, Puccini, and Villa-Lobos, even if the recording may not be wholly classical in nature — for example, he does not play classical guitar. Liebert is an emotional player, but for most of this recording, he tones down his fiery flamenco style for more restrained yet enticingly emotive playing. The resulting synthesis may not be exactly classical, but it's engaging and engrossing.

The Santa Fe Sessions contain new recordings of ten compositions that first appeared in different form on albums released between 1990 and 1995 plus two new compositions. The new versions of older compositions were inspired by the songs themselves changing (improving?) over the course of performing them hundreds of times live. Most of them have grown new introductions, new appendages + new textures.

Ottmar Liebert's 33rd Street label has developed a color-coded system for delineating the various kinds of recording projects he's involved with: blue-coded discs are solo guitar records, the orange code means nuevo flamenco recordings with Luna Negra (his standing duo project with bassist Jon Gagan), and the gray code means dance and remix albums. Thankfully they are separate. La Semana is an outing with Luna Negra. The 12 tunes here have a familiar feel, full of syncopated rhythms ever more pronounced by Gagan's wonderful bass playing, and by the use of digital delays on Liebert's guitars.

In Spain, flamenco's purist hardliners view Ottmar Liebert the same way they view the Gipsy Kings: as a pop culture bastardization of the real thing — the real thing being traditionalists like Paco de Lucía and Tomatito. But that's a narrow-minded and foolish way of looking at it, because Liebert never claimed to be a flamenco traditionalist. The guitar-playing instrumentalist has been bringing a wide variety of influences to the table — influences that continue to serve him well on Winter Rose.
