By demonstrating that the spirit of punk could live in traditional Irish folk music, the Pogues were one of the most radical bands of the mid-'80s. Led by Shane MacGowan, whose slurred, incomprehensible voice often disguised the sheer poetry of his songs, the Pogues were undeniably political not only were many of their songs explicitly in favor of working-class liberalism, but the wild, careening sound of their punk-injected folk was implicitly radical. While the band was clearly radical, they also had a wickedly warped sense of humor, which was abundantly clear on their biggest hit, the fractured Christmas carol "Fairy Tale of New York." The group's first three albums Red Roses for Me, Rum Sodomy & the Lash, If I Should Fall From Grace With God were widely praised in both Britain and America, and by 1988 they had earned substantial cult followings in both countries.

The Macc Lads probably aren't the first band to preserve the sound of a real live fart on vinyl. But they are one of the first to invite the perpetrator of the ensuing symphony to tour with them as their support act. "Mr Methane" tells the rest of the story, as the world's most deliriously disgusting band ignite their fifth album with a chorus that you're certain they must have used in the past…but they haven't. "Gimme gimme gimme gimme alcohol," they demand, and we are launched once again into a madcap world of sex and beer-fuelled mayhem, peopled by such delightful characters as "Fellatio Nelson", "Man in the Boat", "Two Stroke Eddie" and the "Apprentice Dentist", who you should simply hope and pray never turns up at your local surgery. In fact, you probably wouldn't want any of the Macc Lads hanging around your house, your sister, your local bar…but ha! They probably are already, which is why you already know half the words to this album, before you've even played it through, and it doesn't matter how ashamed you are of what you did last night, the Macc Lads did it worse. Good for them. [itunes-apple-com]

Though it was advertised as a live recording, the original LP release of the recital included a number of unacknowledged edits to correct errors and imperfections in Horowitz's playing. While Horowitz, himself, said in later years that his greatest performances were never note perfect, he apparently couldn't resist having the recording doctored. Those edits have always been the subject of controversy, especially since every aspect of the performance seemed engraved on the memories of those present at the historical concert. Sony Classical's new edition of the live recording returrns for the first time to the original, unexpurgated source to restore the pure spontaneity and brillance of Horowitz's playing - mistake and all - on that memorable afternoon.
