Nils new album, City Groove captivates the exciting vibrant sound of the best of today's jazz grooves. The album includes 12 original compositions featuring some of today's hottest musicians accompanying Nils on lead guitar. The players include Ricky Lawson and Simon Phillips on drums; Alex Al, Reggie McBride and Daryl Jones on bass; Clydene Jackson and Mitch Forman on keyboards and Oliver Brown percussion. First ECM solo album from the Norwegian violinist who has gained many friends for his work with the Christian Wallumrød Ensemble. Økland’s solo music is strongly inspired by the rich Norwegian fiddle tradition and its freedom, variation and individuality, yet what he plays is not purely ‘folk music’ rather a reinvention of folk forms, with free improvisation and contemporary composition also powerful influences. The ‘personality’ of the instruments themselves is also an inspiration: on “Monograph” Økland makes the most of the ‘drone’ qualities of the viola d’amore and the Hardanger fiddle (he plays both old and modern models) as well as an old violin from 1700, in a recital of subtle and melodic invention.
With the “Christmas With My Friends” concert recording a long-time dream come true for me.I have always wanted to perform these songs of joy, but in my own way and with good friends as company, being able to concentrate on the music without any boundaries. It is with great pride and happiness that I am presenting this Christmas concert to you. It is the Christmas I dreamed of as a kid and I kept on dreaming till I got the chance to fulfil it and now it ́s here, right in front of me and you. I am as happy as a kid on Christmas Eve when the gifts are handed out (yes, that ́s the way we do it in Sweden). The music on this recording is a choice of songs that I have come across during all the years of dreaming of making this project. ~ Nils Landgren
Norwegian Hardanger fiddle specialist Nils Okland has a broad range of musical interests, as illustrated by his eclectic discography. His solo album Monograph (ECM, 2011) spotlighted his lyrical, folkloric side; Lysøen—Hommage à Ole Bull (ECM, 2011) with keyboardist Sigbjorn Apeland payed tribute to the Norwegian classical tradition; Lumen Drones (ECM, 2014) found him making trance music with two rock musicians; and the recent Felt Like Old Folk (Smeraldina-Rima, 2016) collaboration with the Belgian duo Linus was almost completely improvised. He was also a member of Thomas Stronen's "Time is a Blind Guide" band, although he does not appear on the recording.
Recorded with the same group he had in the studio for SWITCH, Nils Petter Molvaer’s new album ‘Buoyancy’ is the logical continuation of its predecessor, whilst also taking the music a step further. Here the group works more closely as a unit and performs the music more spontaneously in the studio. A range of soundscapes, grooves and hauntingly beautiful little melodies emerge from the trumpet master’s instrument to create an intense collection of colourful paintings in sound. 'Buoyancy' : the ability or tendency of something to float in water; a cheerful and optimistic attitude or disposition.
If listeners had to commit to a single version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons for the rest of their lives, this 1984 BIS recording would be thoroughly satisfying choice. Superbly played, brilliantly recorded period instrument performances of this perennial masterpiece are all but a dime a dozen, and the differences between Hogwood's and Pinnock's and Harnoncourt's readings don't begin to make up for the fatal boredom of their performances. This version with Nils-Erik Sparf and the Drottningholm Court Baroque Ensemble would be an ideal choice because theirs is the freshest performance of the piece. Beyond their excellent technique and impeccable sense of style, Sparf and the Swedish musicians bring joy and enthusiasm to the music, and sound like they are in turn receiving happiness and energy from the music. There's real pleasure here, and real affection, as if the concertos were newly composed and these were their world premieres. Filled out with witty accounts of Vivaldi's F major Concerto for Bassoon and his G minor Concerto for Flute and Bassoon, this disc is a delight.
