From humble beginnings as durable clothing for workers in the mining towns of the Wild West, jeans have evolved into a cultural icon. The attire of a cowboy, a hero, a rock star and an ex-convict, jeans have played a part in antiestablishment movements and mainstream fashion alike. The journey of the jean, a road-movie which leads it from its beginnings to a life as a political symbol and, in our days, an icon ruling a global empire, the documentary looks at the blue-jean phenomenon from a wacky new angle, observing its impact on our lives and civilization.

Meiko Kaji plays Hijiriko, a bored cashier at a swingers' club in Tokyo, who has lost interest in the orgies that take place before her eyes (which are all shot as inserts, without the actress present). One evening Hijiriko takes off in a client's car and crashes into Jiro (Watase), a thug on the run from his turncoat buddies, who has five million yen of their money stashed in his jacket. Hungry for a bit of adventure ("Nothing's any fun anymore"), she gets in his car and the newly formed couple drive off, setting into motion a spree of crimes as they cross the country in search of Jiro's sister, with a quartet of vicious hoods on their heels. Events turn desperate when Jiro loses his fortune and the couple have no choice but to embrace their status of outlaws.

One of several Liverpool pop groups to achieve international success in the sixties, the Swinging blue jeans were actually formed in 1958, when (acknowledging their hero, Gene Vincent), they called themselves the Bluegenes. They were already regular performers at the Cavern club when the Beatles made their debut in 1961 at that now-famous venue - indeed, the Beatles occupied the guest spot on their show…

Mr Little Jeans may not be getting as much attention as some of her other Scandinavian counterparts at the moment, but with the release of her debut, Pocketknife, on the horizon, we’re thinking that’s going to change pretty quickly. Her music is not so much a carbon copy of everything else that’s coming out of Scandinavia (which is a very good thing); rather, the music retains pop elements without vying for your attention through huge production techniques. It seeks your attention through its quiet confidence that’s found in offerings like “The Suburbs” & “Mercy”.
