At first trained in law, the French composer and conductor Joseph Guy Ropartz studied composition with Massenet and then with Csar Franck. He spent much of his career in Nancy and then in Strasbourg, before retiring to his native Brittany, this last a continuing influence on his music. Joseph-Guy Ropartz is now seen as one of the major figures of French music at the beginning of the 20th century. The release marks the sixth volume of chamber music and second of sonatas by Joseph-Guy Ropartz. These are to be true not worl premiere recordings, yet this is inf act the first time these monuments of French music have been brought together.
