The Holocaust is the term generally used to describe the genocide of approximately six million European Jews during World War II, a program of systematic state-sponsored extermination by Nazi Germany. Some scholars maintain that the definition of the Holocaust should also include the Nazis’ systematic murder of millions of people in other groups, including ethnic Poles, Romani, Soviet civilians, prisoners of war, people with disabilities, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and other political and religious opponents.

Documentary/Nazi Propaganda | Director: Kurt Gerron| "The Führer Gives the Jews a City" - International (English title)

Germany's Ministry of Propaganda produced this 1944 film about Theresienstadt, the "model" ghetto established by the Nazis. Joseph Goebbels intended to use the film to prove to the International Red Cross and the world that Jews were being well-treated in the camps. The film, however, is an elaborately staged hoax presenting a completely false picture of camp life. Upon completion, the director and most of the cast of prisoners were shipped to Auschwitz.

In a disarmingly frank interview, Holocaust survivor Freddie Knoller (now in his 90s) tells his personal story of being a young Jewish man during World War II. Speaking directly to camera and accompanied by extensive archive footage, he relives his past and draws on intense memories to navigate the extraordinary adventure of his early life. Freddie's story is a dramatic - and often surprisingly funny - real-life account. It takes us from his family life in 1930s Vienna through the German occupation of Austria and his flight to Belgium.

As preparations begin to mark Holocaust Memorial Day later this month, Fiona Bruce and a small team of experts meet a remarkable group of British survivors whose lives were shattered by the events of World War II. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office hosts a special gathering as Jewish families come together to talk - many for the first time on television - about life under Hitler's tyranny. Precious objects that help tell their stories include family silver hidden from the Nazis, a pair of striped trousers worn in Auschwitz and a gold coin used by a family as vital currency when fleeing over the Pyrenees.
