In 2011, bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Carla Bley led an iteration of the Liberation Music Orchestra in a live concert at the Jazz Middelheim Festival in Antwerp, Belgium. It was partially intended as a warm-up for a forthcoming Liberation Music Orchestra album, a process that had been in the works since 2007. Sadly, Haden died from post-polio syndrome in 2014 before any new LMO tracks could be recorded. Thankfully, Haden, along with his wife, Ruth Cameron Haden, and Bley had discussed his desires for how to finish the album prior to his passing. Furthermore, the 2011 performance, which included two new arrangements earmarked for the planned album, had been recorded for Belgian public radio. All this meant that an album was possible, and in 2015 Bley convened the LMO in a studio to record the new material. Per Haden's request, longtime friend and esteemed bassist Steve Swallow was brought in to play his parts.

The second posthumously released duo album featuring Charlie Haden. The first last year was with Jim Hall recorded in Montreal in 1990. This latest one, poetically titled as Tokyo Adagio, is more recent, Haden duetting with the Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba and draws from a March 2005 Blue Note Tokyo club four-night residency. The polite audience reaction and applause is respectful and the sound of a few knives and forks neither here nor there in the background not distracting: the album feels lived in, which is far better than clinical.

Come Sunday marks the final collaboration between two of jazz’s most legendary players, bassist Charlie Haden and pianist Hank Jones. The album was released on the same day that Charlie Haden was inducted into the National Endowment for the Arts as an NEA Jazz Master. Come Sunday is the follow-up to the duo's classic Steal Away and is the final studio recording by Hank Jones before he passed away. The duo performs with soulful inventiveness while maintaining the songs’ emotional essence on this album of familiar gospel and Americana tunes from their childhood. Included is a swinging rendition of “Give Me That Old Time Religion,” a breathtaking cover of Ellington’s “Come Sunday” and countless others. Experience this seminal jazz album as a pristine high resolution recording.

Keith Jarrett and Charlie Haden broaden the scope of their duo project to showcase jazz classics like Thelonious Monk’s “Round Midnight” and Bud Powell’s spritely “Dance Of The Infidels”. Love songs, however, are to the fore in this selection, with tender versions of “My Old Flame”, “My Ship”, “It Might As Well Be Spring”, “Everything Happens To Me”, and “Every Time We Say Goodbye” as well as alternate takes of “Where Can I Go Without You” and “Goodbye”, every bit as touching as the Jasmine renditions. “When we play together it’s like two people singing”, said Jarrett of his reunion with Haden. The intentions of the song are honored, the shades of meaning in a melody or a lyric explored instrumentally. As Charlie Haden put it, “Keith really listens, and I listen. That’s the secret. It’s about listening”.

Carta de Amor is a fascinating set of previously unreleased live recordings from three outstanding musicians: Jan Garbarek, Egberto Gismonti and Charlie Haden. The album documents music captured at Munich’s Amerika Haus in April, 1981 and highlights the trio’s improvisational empathy and sensibilities. Each musician contributes pieces to this repertoire which includes five pieces by Gismonti, Garbarek’s “Spor” and Charlie Haden’s “La Pasionaria”.
