Café Del Mar story continues with Volume 18, another double cd in the long running series. While the packaging is as beautiful as ever, the music on this set is a somewhat mixed bag. Notable Café Del Mar stars are present here who have made their presence known on many a previous Café Del Mar releases but some of their new releases, presented especially for this release, are bland.

This compilation is a great improvement on last years Vol 9. From the outset with Firewires "Substructure" this sets the feel for the rest of the album; offering the atmosphere of a hot summer night next to the sea in a rich rhythmic electonic bass driven soundscape.

The popular Cafe del Mar series returns with Vol. 9, compiled by longtime curator DJ Bruno. As with the series' other volumes, this collection features plenty of atmospheric chill-out music, including Lovers Lane's "Island Memories," which sports a bassline uncannily similar to that of Grandmaster Flash's "White Lines (Don't Do It)"; Kalliope's appropriately spaced-out "Lunar Landings"; Quantic's jazzy, subterranean "Time Is the Enemy"; and Troya's surprisingly intricate "Rue de Solieil," which stands out amongst the ambient washes that make up most of the album.

In the 1990s, the Café del Mar compilations became a fashionable alternative to the more aggressive and forceful electronic sounds that people were dancing to at raves. If you were open to hearing electronic club music but didn't care for techno, trance, jungle/drum'n'bass, or acid house, the Café del Mar compilations could acquaint you with a whole other electronic world – an ambient/trip-hop world with a laid-back, chill-out orientation.

The Cafe del Mar series of compilations is inspired by a cafe of the same name in Ibiza, centered around sunset watching, and also, like much of Ibiza, club music. The ambient music on these anthologies is designed to complement sunset watching, and the collections have thereby become renowned as repositories of "chill out" music; it's even been reported that Madonna counts these among her favorite records.

Jose Padilla has outdone himself with Vol.6, the final addition to his masterpiece series of compilations. He has somehow managed to bring music from every corner of the world, put it all on the same album and breathe life into it, making it a magical walk on the beaches of Ibiza.

The fifth volume in the Café del Mar series continues Ibiza legend José Padilla's wide-ranging look at what can possibly make up a dance album: a track from Indian film soundtracker AR Rahman, a light dubby trip through Prozac Muzak from Levitation, the obligatory Kruder & Dorfmeister remix (an excellent remake of Lamb's "Transfatty Acid"), plus a host of Ibizan house touchstones (Larry Heard, Ballistic Brothers, Electribe 101, Salt Tank).
