The selections on this album span 70 years of popular song, because the more Susannah felt she knows about singers and songs, the more she adores the women who started it all: the great Empress of the Blues, Bessie Smith, and the mother of all modern popular singing, Ethel Waters. She also feels a great affinity for Brazilian songs, the sound of the language and the sadness and seriousness of the lyrics, and they too are included here.

Bless This House was released in 1956 and features Mahalia Jackson and the Falls-Jones Ensemble. This LP is a favorite of the gospel purists who feel alienated by Jackson's collaborations with pop artists like Percy Faith and Harpo Marx. The songs on Bless This House feature great supporting performances by pianist Mildred Falls and organist Ralph Jones. Highlights include a jazzy, swinging "Let the Church Roll On," a dark, bluesy "Trouble With the Word," and energetic versions of "Down By the Riverside" and "It Don't Cost Very Much." Bless This House includes some of Jackson's most serious offerings and reflects the influence of blues singers Bessie Smith and Ma Rainey on her vocal style. A great introduction to Jackson's joyous, religious music and a good beginning for new listeners.

Tommy Smith, the great Scottish saxophonist, composer, bandleader and educator, studied classical orchestration in the 1990s, and has played in plenty of challenging jazz/classical settings. But Modern Jacobite is his most ambitious journey yet, centred on an intricately woven three-movement symphonic work inspired by the Jacobite uprisings; it is bookended by a rapturous tenor-sax improvisation on Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, and by Chick Corea’s famous Children’s Songs interleaved with Smith’s own Bairn’s Songs as personal variations on the same theme. The Jacobite pieces embrace violent, cinematic soundscapes for slewing brass and thundering percussion; deep cello themes that segue into pulsating tenor-sax ruminations; Scottish folk dances that become pipe-toned tenor jigs.

Mira, the trio's studio follow-up, is a programme of soulful ballads and midtempo free-floating sound explorations, pairing Anderson’s muscular bass with Smith’s vaulting tenor in an exceptionally compelling blend.

To follow up her victory at the 2014 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocals Competition, Ashleigh Smith releases her debut solo album Sunkissed, a blend of original songs she co-wrote and carefully chosen covers. While her iridescent alto is capable of tackling material underscored by darker themes such as heartache and sobering social commentary, optimistic rays of light always shine through her voice. The musicians accompanying her and most of Smith’s writing partners were fellow classmates of hers from the University of North Texas, where she studied jazz.

The Bell features dynamic chamber music compositions written for masterful improvisers. The best thing I caught all weekend, said critic Peter Margasak of the 2014 New York Winter Jazzfest, was a superb trio led by drummer Ches Smith with pianist Craig Taborn and violist Mat Maneri, which expertly infused seductively narcotic writing with a mixture of brooding melody and rich texture. Since that NY debut, the trio has become a priority project for all participants and in June 2015 Smith, Taborn and Maneri recorded The Bell at Avatar Studios with Manfred Eicher as producer. Ches Smith's first album as a leader for ECM follows appearances for the label with Tim Berne's Snakeoil and with Robin Williamson. Ches has worked a very wide range of music in the course of his career, playing with musicians from Marc Ribot to Terry Riley to Wadada Leo Smith and his own groups have been informed by his far-reaching experience.
