If the name doesn’t exactly sound familiar, there’s no mistaking that furrowed brow — Eliot Sumner is the youngest daughter of Sting (ne Gordon Sumner) and his second wife, Trudie Styler. On her solo debut, “Information,” the 25-year-old singer-songwriter is quick to establish her own identity while staying true to her family’s unrestrained creative spirit. She assertively lays her husky, androgynous voice over the insistent synthesizer rhythms of songs like “Firewood,” “After Dark” and the soaring “I Followed You Home,” all of which have an elegant, instant appeal. There are shades of her father’s work too, especially on the tracks “Species” and “Dead Arms and Dead Legs,” which sounds like an outtake from “Regatta de Blanc.” And why not? When everyone else with Fender Precision bass is trying so hard to capture that magic, it helps to have a direct line. — Aidin Vaziri

2009 debut album from this band fronted by former New Order/Joy Division guitarist Bernard Sumner. Never Cry Another Tear rings with familiar joys: playing of beautifully observed minimalism and a voice of wonderfully understated north-western soul. But there's also a new voice to be heard, one again from England's north west. Singing alongside Bernard is Jake Evans, a talented musician from Macclesfield. The album also features Phil Cunningham, a man familiar from both Marion and the most recent incarnation of New Order. Perhaps Bad Lieutenant can be seen as a new vehicle from a celebrated manufacturer: previous technology has been incorporated, but the overall appearance is new and it'll take you where you want to go in novel and exhilarating style.

Cast/Avec Sam Riley (Ian Curtis), Samantha Morton (Deborah 'Debbie' Curtis), Alexandra Maria Lara (Annik Honoré), Joe Anderson (Peter 'Hooky' Hook), James Anthony Pearson (Bernard Sumner), Toby Kebbell (Rob Gretton), Craig Parkinson (Tony Wilson), Harry Treadaway (Stephen Morris), Andrew Sheridan (Terry)

In 1973, Ian Curtis, at age seventeen, is living with his parents, Kevin and Doreen, and his sister, Carole. In a chemistry class, he daydreams, possibly displaying a symptom of petit mal, a minor form of the epilepsy which was to develop later in his life. It is during this period of his life that he first meets Debbie Woodruff, who is dating his best friend Nick. After bonding over a love of music and Ian's penchant for poetry, they attend a David Bowie concert together, realizing their mutual attraction. Ian proposes and Debbie accepts, and though extremely young, they marry and move in together. His interest in married life fading soon after, however, Ian retreats to the solitude of his room, where he writes poetry, as Debbie decorates the house. In 1976, after attending a Sex Pistols gig, Ian and Debbie meet Bernard Sumner, Peter Hook, and Terry Mason, the members of a band who disliked their lead singer. Ian approaches the trio at the end of the gig, suggesting that he become their vocalist instead, which leads to the formation of Warsaw. With Stephen Morris recruited as the drummer, and Mason taking over managerial duties, the band anxiously play their first gig.

This two-man Manchester supergroup – New Order's Bernard Sumner and The Smith's Johnny Marr – made one of the best debuts of the '90s with Electronic. More New Order than The Smiths, the album was a blend of plangent fretwork and frenetic sequencing, with bleak lyrics intoned in Sumner's clean, boyish tenor. Get the Message was orthodox '80s pop, but the heartbreaking Gangster was an electro-rock masterpiece. The album featured engaging cameos from the Pet Shop Boys on Getting Away with It and The Patience of a Saint.
