Widely regarded as a masterpiece of Spanish cinema, this allegorical tale is set in a remote village in the 1940s. The life in the village is calm and uneventful – an allegory of Spanish life after General Franco's victory in the Spanish Civil War. While their father (Fernando Fernán Gómez) studies bees in his beehive and their mother (Teresa Gimpera) writes letters to a non-existent correspondent, two young girls, Ana (Ana Torrent) and Isabel (Isabel Telleria), go to see James Whale's Frankenstein at a local cinema. Though they can hardly understand the concept, both girls are deeply impressed with the moment when a little girl gives a flower to the monster. Isabel, the older sister, tells Ana that the monster actually exists as a spirit that you can't see unless you know how to approach him. Ana starts wandering around the countryside in search of the kind creature.

In a small Castilian village in 1940, in the wake of the country’s devastating civil war, six-year-old Ana attends a traveling movie show of Frankenstein and becomes possessed by the memory of it. Produced as Franco’s long regime was nearing its end, The Spirit of the Beehive is a bewitching portrait of a child’s haunted inner life and one of the most visually arresting movies ever made.

You'd be hard pressed to find a more talented group of singers in this style. Phenomenal a cappella I would put up against anything like it out there. From start to finish this entire album will get you in "the spirit of the season". Fans of Pentatonix, Singers Unlimited, and The Voices of Liberty will want to add this to their Christmas playlist. The album is a nice mixture of sacred and secular Holiday songs with original arrangements that are unique and exciting to listen to. Some of my favorite tracks include the arrangement of "Mary Did You Know?" featuring its composer Mark Lowry on lead. "Merry Christmas Darling," that possibly improves upon the original classic Carpenters' track. And Disney fans will appreciate "Carol of the Bells of Notre Dame" which is a thrilling mash up of "Carol of the Bells" and "The Bells of Notre Dame" from Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". Last, be sure to listen to track 8, a medley of "O Come, O Come Emmanuel/The First Noel/ & I Wonder As I Wander".
