In a social atmosphere of jazz, one interfaces with people from all walks of life. One such person is the late Robert (Bob) Colley. A friendship was spawned between Bob and I, as he was very helpful in so many ways to so many musicians. Bob had gotten involved with booking a jazz club in Newark N.J. and asked me if I’d be interested in accompanying a singer friend Naima Shamborguer from Detroit. Unfortunately the club decided to discontinue its jazz policy and the engagement didn’t happen. However greater things prevailed, and a friendship spawned between Naima, her husband George and I. The wonderful couple made a trip to my home in Baltimore and after a great seafood lunch at one of Baltimore’s great restaurants, we went back to my home and sat around the piano playing and singing.

In 'Round Midnight, real-life jazz legend Dexter Gordon brilliantly portrays the fictional tenor sax player Dale Turner, a musician slowly losing the battle with alcoholism, estranged from his family, and hanging on by a thread in the 1950's New York jazz world. Dale gets an offer to play in Paris, where, like many other black American musicians at the time, he enjoys a respect for his humanity that is not based upon the color of his skin. A Parisian man who is obsessed with Turner's music befriends him and attempts to save Turner from himself. Although for Dale the damage is already done, his poignant relationship with the man and his young daughter re-kindles his spirit and his music as the end draws near.

Ben Webster is probably best known for his eloquent ballad playing. On JAZZ 'ROUND MIDNIGHT, we are treated to no less than 15 ballads, all of which are performed superbly. Webster is one of the great jazz romantics, and his sultry ballad style stirs the heart and soul with every phrase. It's not just the way he caresses each note, or the thick airy sound he gets on his tenor sax; it's the lyrical, almost voice-like character of his playing that makes all of these songs so memorable. Backed by such notables as Oscar Peterson and Ray Brown, Webster's renditions of "You're Getting To Be a Habit With Me," "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning," "We'll Be Together Again," and others, sparkle with vitality, romance, and warmth. Finally, Webster's idol, Coleman Hawkins, sits in on "Prisoner of Love" making this CD sparkle even that much more. One of the great jazz ballad albums, JAZZ 'ROUND MIDNIGHT is a must for any candlelight dinner.

Andy Bey remains what he was back when this album first took shape—the most recognized, and perhaps the most recognizable, member of the Bey family. A fearsomely gifted singer, he boasts spectacular range all but disguised by the warmth and immediacy of his vocal instrument…Because of his prominence in the trio, Andy and the Bey Sisters often falls into the category of origin bands—the trio that launched Andy Bey’s career…

Having Harry Allen and Scott Hamilton team together on a record date, at a jazz party, at a jazz festival or on any bandstand is quite logical. Their playing is very complementary and they blend together well yet they have slightly different sounds. They help keep the tradition of swing tenor alive without sounding exactly like any of their historical predecessors. And they can always be relied upon to play music that is both exciting and tasteful.

This is a typically tasteful Kenny Burrell record (reissued on CD) with the guitarist mostly emphasizing ballads. Five of the seven songs (which include "Make Someone Happy," "Since I Fell for You" and the theme from "A Streetcar Named Desire") find Burrell assisted by pianist Richard Wyands (who also played electric piano), bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Lenny McBrowne. "'Round Midnight" is played by Burrell with pianist Joe Sample, bassist Johnson and drummer Paul Humphrey while "Blues in the Night" is an unaccompanied guitar solo. Although the music overall is well-played, no real sparks fly and the results often border on being sleepy.

Another in a long line of fine Jazz 'Round Midnight collections from Verve, this Erroll Garner installment finds the pianist on a fine set of both trio sides and solo pieces. And if a jazz figure was ever tailor-made for this ballad-heavy series, then it's the dulcet-fingered Garner.
