Moanin' is a jazz album by Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers recorded in 1958. The album stands as one of the archetypal hard bop albums of the era, for the intensity of Blakey's drumming and the work of Morgan, Golson and Timmons, and for its combination of old-fashioned gospel and blues influences with a sophisticated modern jazz sensibility. The album was identified by Scott Yanow in his Allmusic essay "Hard Bop" as one of the 17 Essential Hard Bop Recordings.

Reissue from Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers features the high-fidelity SHM-CD format (compatible with standard CD player) and 24bit remastering. Includes an alternate take of "Blues March" for the first time in the world. Moanin' includes some of the greatest music Blakey produced in the studio with arguably his very best band. There are three tracks that are immortal and will always stand the test of time. The title selection is a pure tuneful melody stewed in a bluesy shuffle penned by pianist Bobby Timmons, while tenor saxophonist Benny Golson's classy, slowed "Along Came Betty" and the static, militaristic "Blues March" will always have a home in the repertoire of every student or professional jazz band.

Nancy Wright is an Ohio-bred, San Francisco-based musician whose hearty tenor saxophone has graced many discs of Bay Area artists. She has also performed and recorded with blues giants Stevie Ray Vaughan, B.B. King, and Albert Collins. For her debut disc, MOANIN,’ Ms. Wright tips her hat to the blues- and R&B-charged jazz organ combo sound, backed by guitar, organ (Tony Monaco), and drums. She naturally accents the blues side of her musical personality and adds spice to the mix with some nifty New Orleans overtones.

Art Blakey's most successful album gave us Bobby Timmons' "Moanin'" and Benny Golson's "Along Came Betty" and "Blues March," tunes so powerful that Blakey played them almost every night for the next 30 years. This beautifully performed and recorded session made the Jazz Messengers a jazz institution and put Golson, Timmons and Morgan to the forefront of jazz.

A live set by Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers recorded in Europe in 1968, Moanin' has been released a couple of previous times by different labels. The music, which features Blakey on drums, Bill Hardman on trumpet, Billy Harper on tenor sax, Ronnie Mathews on piano, Julian Priester on trombone, and Lawrence Evans on bass, is surprisingly well recorded and it's an energetic and vigorous set with spirited versions of "Slide's Delight" and the title tune.

The first comprehensive guide to pre-1934 female popular vocal recordings sung in English–from around the world and including all styles–this discographical study includes solos, duets, trios, and quartets composed by the great songwriters of the early 1900s (from Irving Berlin to Victor Young). The majority of the listings includes material that has not been previously published, and a large number of entries profile such prolific artists as Helen Clark and Gladys Rice, who are not in previous discographies. A special feature includes data on sound-on-disc recording made for early "talking-picture" musical shorts (especially by Vitaphone) that is not documented elsewhere. A comprehensive title index includes composer credits for the majority of the titles listed.
