Marcus Printup gained his initial recognition for his playing with pianist Marcus Roberts' group. His second Blue Note recording as a leader features his attractive trumpet in a quintet with Roberts, the Paul Gonsalves-inspired tenor of Stephen Riley, bassist Reuben Rogers and the young drummer Jason Marsalis. Printup at this point already had a fairly orignal sound of his own which was slightly influenced by Wynton Marsalis.

A generation ago, tribute albums to Charlie Parker often featured extended passages of Bird’s solos transcribed for one or more horns, or bands mirroring the traditional Parker bebop small groups of alto sax, trumpet, piano, bass and drums. And musicians on them paid close homage to Parker by playing in a decidedly neo-bop style. You won’t find much, if any, of that here.

Sparkling work from trumpeter Marcus Printup a player who can blow with great power when needed, but also hit these slinky, soulful moments too a balance that only seems to get better and better with each new record! There's a bit of Freddie Hubbard in that approach, but Printup's definitely his own man too and can step easily into bolder, more spiritual passages especially when working with a group this great as the lineup includes Patrick Bartley on alto, Coleman Hughes on trombone, Allyn Johnson on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass, and Ulysses Owens on drums!

Sweet, Intelligent tone in the new Lou Donaldson… The work "Boogaloo" makes me think of the Lou Donaldson soul jazz of the 1960s on Blue Note. Marcus Printup resurrects this term for his debut recording for the Nagel Heyer label and gives it a bit of a dusting off and updating. The New Boogaloo is not a blues blowing session in 4/4 meter. It is an intelligently conceived and deftly executed collection of originals with two standards thrown in, performed by the stars of the new generation of jazz. Mr. Printup, a 35-year-old converse, Georgia native was discovered in 1991 by then Wynton Marsalis pianist, Marcus Roberts. Roberts invited Printup to perform on his Blues for a New Millennium recording.

A really lyrical set from trumpeter Marcus Printup – done in close collaboration with harpist (and wife) Riza Printup – a player who gives the record a really unique sort of sound! Riza doesn't pluck her instrument as much as other jazz harpists – such as Dorothy Ashby – and instead, she often uses the harp to bring these rich waves of sound to the album – augmenting sounds from Printup's trumpet, and the bass of Ben Williams and drums of EJ Strickland – creating a quality that's really fresh, and which seems to suit all the warm tones of Marcus' horn in a really great way. Things are never cheesy at all, but hit this evocative sound that really goes beyond any expectations you might have.

Since making his debut as a leader with 2001's At Last, Marcus Strickland has established a reputation as a composer of remarkable depth and breadth. On Nihil Novi, his first Blue Note offering, Strickland showcases a new band – trumpeter Keyon Harrold, keyboardists Mitch Henry and Masayuki Hirano, bassist Kyle Miles, and drummer Charles Haynes. His new tunes offer an even greater array of styles, harmonic textures, and dynamics, and reveal his preoccupation with hip-hop beatmaking. (This isn't a jazz/hip-hop fusion record.) Nihil Novi was expertly and empathetically produced by Meshell Ndegeocello, who also guests on bass. Strickland also brings in some old friends and allies, including Robert Glasper, Chris Dave, Pino Palladino, and Chris Bruce.
