John Coltrane's matchup with singer Johnny Hartman, although quite unexpected, works extremely well. Hartman was in prime form on the six ballads, and his versions of "Lush Life" and "My One and Only Love" have never been topped…

Those who saw The Bridges of Madison County now know what jazz fans have known for a long time: when it comes to mellow jazz crooners, Johnny Hartman is at the top of the list. This disc includes two albums Hartman recorded during the '60s for a total of 17 tracks, with such classic tunes as Almost Like Being in Love; Isn't It Romantic , and Bidin' My Time sung with Johnny's trademark rich vibrato.

Johnny Hartman's next-to-last album (he made a record for Audiophile 12 days later) finds the 57-year-old singer still in prime form. His rich baritone voice is joined by a sextet also including Frank Wess (on tenor and flute), trumpeter Joe Wilder and pianist Billy Taylor. The ballads range from slow to a brighter medium-tempo pace, and Hartman (particularly on such tunes as "Easy Living," "Wave" and "I Could Write a Book") shows that he still had it this late in his career. Unfortunately, this Bee Hive album has yet to be reissued domestically on CD.

John Coltrane's matchup with singer Johnny Hartman, although quite unexpected, works extremely well. Hartman was in prime form on the six ballads, and his versions of "Lush Life" and "My One and Only Love" have never been topped. Coltrane's playing throughout the session is beautiful, sympathetic, and still exploratory; he sticks exclusively to tenor on the date. At only half an hour, one wishes there were twice as much music, but what is here is classic, essential for all jazz collections.

As the latest edition in its For Lovers series, Verve issues this stellar collection of cuts by "the Voice" himself, Johnny Hartman. Indeed, given the nature of Hartman's significant – and even singular contribution – to the art of the ballad, it's a wonder that the label didn't issue one before now.

Johnny Hartman, known best for his 1963 collaboration with John Coltrane, is considered by many to be one of the most gifted jazz vocalists ever, yet his discography is surprisingly limited and he never gained the recognition he so justly deserved during his lifetime. This double CD edition contains a complete previously unreleased performance by Johnny Hartman backed by a trio - taped in 1976 from a radio broadcast in Boston. It is the first known recording of Hartman following his 1973 album “I've Been There” - the next entry in his discography being the October 1977 live set at the Sometime Club in Tokyo, with Roland Hanna and George Mraz - which is presented here as a 9-track bonus.

2 complete albums on 1 CD: only previously released on two separate LPs in Japan, both now out of print. Includes the complete albums: "Johnny Hartman: Trane's Favorites" and "Johnny Hartman Meets Terumasa Hino". One of the finest singers in jazz history, Johnny Hartman's discography made up in quality for its lack of quantity. This, of course, adds extra importance to each and every Hartman recording - especially his recordings in a small band format, as is the case with these two outstanding Tokyo albums.
