Released as part of Apple/EMI’s extensive 2010 John Lennon remasters series, the single-disc Power to the People: The Hits covers familiar territory, but then again, that’s the point of this collection. It’s not designed to dig deep into John's catalog, it’s designed as the latest iteration of the canon, replacing 1997’s Lennon Legend, the last big-budget single-disc compilation. Power to the People is five cuts shorter than Lennon Legend, ditching album cuts “Love” and “Borrowed Time,” swapping the charting singles, “Mother” and “Nobody Told Me,” for the non-charting “Gimme Some Truth” and the actual number 18 hit “Mind Games”…

There sure hasn't been a shortage of John Lennon compilations over the years, but there hasn't been a new collection since 1997's Lennon Legend and there haven't been any two-CD sets covering his entire career until 2005's Working Class Hero: The Definitive Lennon, that is. Released on October 4, 2005, this surely was intended as a tie-in to the Broadway show Lennon: The Musical, but it wound up appearing ten days after the musical concluded its disastrous run. Even if the show did tank, it provided the occasion for this strong collection. Working Class Hero may tread familiar territory not only does it have all the usual suspects, from "Instant Karma" to "(Just Like) Starting Over," it has them in a sequencing that feels familiar, even it doesn't correspond to any specific previous release but that's fine, because it provides a rather thorough overview of Lennon's best-known solo songs.

The first album co-billed to John Lennon and Yoko Ono to actually contain recognizable pop music, Some Time in New York City found the Lennons in an explicitly political phase. This was understandable – at the time, Lennon was neck-deep in his struggle to remain in the United States, a conflict rooted in his antiwar and antiestablishment politics and the enmity of the Nixon administration…

John Lennon and Yoko Ono's much-maligned 1968 experimental album consists of noises, instrumental feedback, and mumbling. It's not for anyone expecting "Imagine," but if you are a Beatles or Lennon completist, you’ll want to check it out. Of interest is the bonus track, “Remember Love.” It was the b-side to “Give Peace A Chance” and the track makes it CD debut on this 1997 Ryko reissue. It's just Lennon on acoustic guitar and Ono on vocal, and it is quite an unexpected surprise. The original LP tracks (tracks 1 and 2 on the CD) each took up a side of the record and ran about 14 minutes each. Because “Remember Love” is the real attraction here it is offered as a stand-alone .wav file for those not wishing to suffer through the rest of the album. With complete booklet scans at 600 d.p.i.
