Working together since 1978, the partnership of Zorn and Frith is one of the most enduring musical partnerships in the downtown scene. Their periodic duo concerts have always been special events in themselves, but when it happens in celebration of Zorn's 50th Birthday, it takes on even greater meaning. Two masters of improvisation meet head to head in the redhot crucible of Tonic for an hour of telepathic communication and exploration, and you are there.

Rusconi are a young and adventurous jazz band; who could be a better collaborative partner than old and adventurous jazz man Fred Frith? The former Henry Cow man slots his jagged guitar right into the Rusconi sound.

July 11, 2010: Sunday in Copenhagen and last day of the annual (ten days long and intense) Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Today is also the World Cup Final in Johannesburg: Holland vs Spain. Oppressively hot, thunder in the air. Fred and I are in the Village Studio a little outside Copenhagen for a session, after having played a duo concert at CJF a couple of days before.

This is the first duo effort to be released by Canada-born, but long time contributor to the San Francisco Bay Area scene trumpeter Darren Johnston, and the legendary guitar iconoclast Fred Frith. They can also be heard together on the fine release “Reasons For Moving,” (Not Two, 2007), alongside Larry Ochs, Devin Hoff and Ches Smith, but in this more intimate musical gathering, the results are truly astonishing. The genesis for this session was originally to provide sounds for a short dance film for filmmakers John Haptas and Kristine Samuelson and choreographer Amy Seiwert in a commission for the SF Dance Film Festival, but as can happen when improvisors are effectively inspired by one another, this led to a full release’s worth of exciting new music.

Thrilling cooperation between the Swiss jazz band RUSCONI and the British avantgarde guitar player FRED FRITH (Ex.Henry Cow). RUSCONI is a young trio (Stefan Rusconi -Piano, Claudio Strübly-Drums, Fabian Gisler-Bass) from switzerland playing a very modern and contemporary version of jazz. Their unique style and way of interpretation gave them a large, very young audience. Their biggest success was the album "It is A Sonic Life", with re-interpreted songs of Sonic Youth. The new (live) album followed a cooperation between Rusconi and guitar player FRED FRITH. The musicians met a few years ago and FRITH also contributed parts to one older album of RUSCONI. Both agreed to play complete shows together . This happened between 2012 and 2014 and two of the recordings are now pressed on CD and LP. The A-Side contains an audio recoding from the show in Zürich, B-Side a recording from the show in Hamburg.

A new "piano icon" – this is how Fred Frith describes Katharina Weber. For almost thirty years now the classically trained pianist and composer moves within the world of New Music and Improvisation.

Electric guitar and the amplified acoustic bass – two distinctive sound generators capable of creating a picture of almost symphonic dimensions. Intakt Records' inspirational director Patrik Landolt had a feel about the outcome and brought us into the studio of Willy Strehler in Switzerland to fulfill a long standing ambition to record an album of music together. Never having performed on the same stage, we created a music which is syllogistic in the sense that the end product is drawn from two very different musical lives each reflecting our own history.

'Ironic Universe' is the latest album from acoustic guitar virtuoso Janet Feder and sees her team up with another guitar great - Fred Frith. I'm sure you're thinking then that we're in for a journey into the academic side of the avant-garde, and in many ways that's true, but this is one of the most enjoyable and listenable discs of its kind that I've heard in quite some time…

Produced and released by no other than John Zorn and his Tzadik label, this is another special project from multi-instrumentalist/composer/improviser, Fred Frith, who has been bravely crossing musical borders since the early 1970s. No doubt dynamic and astonishing in their scope, these remarkable duo sessions were recorded during the filming of Thomas Riedelsheimer's exquisite documentary, Touch The Sound, which is about Scottish virtuoso percussionist, Evelyn Glennie. Combining the unpredictability of an improvised first encounter with the magic of studio composition, this is music of another dimension, highlighting the power and sensitivity of both players.

By this point Henry Cow consisted of guitarist Fred Frith, drummer Chris Cutler, bassist John Greaves, keyboardist Tim Hodgkinson, and, of particular importance to the band's sound at this point, bassoonist Lindsay Cooper. As is so often the case with avant-garde rock & roll, it's the composed pieces that work best, and the fact that Frith is responsible for the majority of them is significant…
