Susannah McCorkle spoke Italian, Spanish, German, and Portuguese in addition to English; she had worked as an interpreter before she devoted herself to singing. On her second Concord CD, McCorkle sang ten Brazilian songs plus "Estate," switching between English, Portuguese, and Italian. There is no communication problem as far as conveying her feelings and the high quality of the melodies, so this is a more accessible release than one might think. The vocalist's backup group includes pianist Lee Musiker, Scott Hamilton on tenor, and guitarist Emily Remler.

This 2-CD set is a revelation. The extant catalogue of really hot female jazz guitarists is shockingly limited and Fox may now very well head the list. Emily Remler and Leni Stern come to mind, but neither of them could boast a style and acumen quite so strongly placed in modern trad and abstract jazz styles while simultaneously mutating every measure. Such a state-of-mind is starkly obvious on the second CD, a set of solos on standards that, while a skosh sterilely recorded, are astonishing for their wealth of innovation, technique, and personal voice, especially in atonalities and tweaks. Fox carries a lineage of the finest players like a bionic implant, evidencing Jim Hall, John Abercrombie, Joe Beck, Pat Martino, and, most importantly, her true mentor, Joe Pass, an icon who found himself involuntarily so impressed by the guitarist 15 years ago that he not only agreed to give her a lesson but spent six straight hours at the outset, later becoming a friend.

Ray Brown, Gene Harris & Gerryck King are spectacular in this 1984 recording. Red Holloway (tenor sax) & a rare appearance by the great Emily Remler (guitar) round out the original musicians.

He also recorded with Burton in the 1970s, in addition to work with Dave Liebman/Open Sky, Pat Metheny, Mike Gibbs, Hal Galper, Gil Goldstein, Steve Swallow, Steve Kuhn/Sheila Jordan (from 1979 to 1982), George Gruntz, and Emily Remler (from 1983 to 1984). …throughout this fine release. Seven of the eight numbers (highlighted by "Exactly Like You," "Teach Me Tonight," and "Sweet Georgia Brown") feature Brown, Harris, and drummer Gerryck King playing soulful bop, while "Mistreated But Undefeated Blues" adds guitarist Emily Remler and the tenor of Red Holloway. An excellent effort.

David Benoit took a break from the type of smooth jazz fluff he usually records and delivered a respectable, straight-ahead CD with Waiting for Spring. Bill Evans is obviously a great influence on Benoit, whose vulnerability makes his love of the late piano legend obvious on originals as well as lyrical interpretations of standards like "My Romance" and "Secret Love." Benoit has a fine soloist in the late guitarist Emily Remler, who is consistently warm, melodic, and inviting. Though the album isn't breathtaking, it's satisfying and heartfelt.

The title of Emily Jane White's fifth album, They Moved in Shadow All Together, is a play on the opening line from Cormac McCarthy's novel Outer Dark which hauntingly depicts a group of uncanny travellers descending a hill in the Appalachian mountains. White remembers being struck by the vision of the travellers' collective movement - fragmented, yet whole - and felt its resonance with her burgeoning record and its thematic exploration of trauma.
