Deep Purple are remembered by most folks as the Ian Gillan-fronted hard rock band that recorded the iconic "Smoke on the Water," but as is the case with most recording artists, there's a whole lot more to the story, and in this case, the preamble part of Deep Purple's career might arguably actually be more exciting and interesting. The first incarnation of the band featured Rod Evans as the lead singer, and of course the guitar playing of Ritchie Blackmore, and if there's a better opening single for a band than Deep Purple's classic cover of Joe South's "Hush," well, there's little doubt "Hush" would hold its own. This two-disc set will be a treasure to Deep Purple fans, for it collects in one place for the first time all of the band's live BBC sessions between 1968 and 1970, and it catches both versions of Deep Purple and spotlights the transfer of one to the other…

The transition of Deep Purple from a cult UK band that had chart success stateside, to the rock giants we all know is captured in these fascinating session recordings. Although the rarity of some of the sessions means the sound quality is often less than perfect, it is the stunning performances, many live-in studio, which shine through. This was a band who could play and who could electrify the audience and the listener. Many Purple aficionados would dare to suggest that the session version of the classic 'Child In Time' surpasses that of the studio version. That is, of course, is subjective but why this set is so important to the Purple story, to the band's fans and any general rock fan.

Deep Purple is one of the most influential and important guitar bands in history, one of the godfathers of the heavy metal genre, with over 100 million album sales worldwide to their name. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of Deep Purple's groundbreaking double live album Made in Japan, this documentary explores these recordings and Deep Purple mark 2, the line-up between 1969 and 1973. The film highlights the mark 2 period of this classic British rock band featuring the classic line-up of Ian Gillan, Ritchie Blackmore, Jon Lord, Roger Glover and Ian Paice with a focus on the recording of the album Machine Head in Montreux, Switzerland in late 1971; the friction that developed within the band as a result of this recording and their incessant touring of the world in general and North America in particular; and the live recordings of the band's first Japanese tour in August 1972, released that December in the UK as Made in Japan, a Number 1 UK album. Lars Ulrich of Metallica has cited Made in Japan as his favourite album of all time.

First recorded in 1972 for the BBC, Deep Purple in concert was not released until 1980 and what a release! This is Deep Purple at the top of their game. To make this collection even more spectacular, two of Deep Purple's biggest hits have been added as bonus tracks. In 1968, Hush hit the American charts and climbed to #4. In 1969, River Deep Mountain High reached #53 on the Billboard charts. On River Deep Mountain High the band remained faithful to Phil Spector’s "wall of sound".
