All the tunes recorded by this legendary label. Each volume represents one year's recording activity: 1937, 1938 and 1939. Featuring Lester Young, Buck Clayton, Jo Jones, among others. Newly remastered. I don't have much to say about this compilation. Hey, it's Count Basie from the late 1930s! What more need be said?! Just listen to the "skeletal" piano by the genius Count Basie. Talk about the use of white space! And, of course, that absolutely KILLER rhythm section! I will mention that all of the tracks are presented in the sequence they were recorded except for the alternate takes which are at the end of each disc respectively. Presumably, the alts presented here were recorded at the same time as the masters (as implied, though not overtly stated, in the booklet).

Look out! as the man himself said, 'This is it!' Throw away those old bootlegs, sell the other albums and pick up these nine little boogie woogie blue plates. This is everything Louis Jordan recorded for Decca - in other words nine CDs of the most influential, and purely enjoyable R&B ever cut. Truly Reet Petite And Gone! Here are just a few of the memorable jump 'n' jive hits: Outskirts Of Town, What's The Use Of Gettin' Sober, Five Guys Named Moe, GI Jive, Caldonia, Buzz Me, Salt Pork West Virginia, Beware, Stone Cold Dead In The Market (with Ella Fitzgerald), Choo-Choo Ch'Boogie, Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens, Open The Door Richard, Boogie Woogie Blue Plate, Run Joe, Baby It's Cold Outside (with Ella Fitzgerald), Beans And Cornbread, Saturday Night Fish Fry and Blue Light Boogie. It's no exaggeration to say that R&B starts here. This is also the only set carefully re-engineered from the original metal parts.

The 4 disc set "The Legendary Decca Recordings" is a fantastic collection of 80 songs that Ella Fitzgerald recorded while at Decca records. The earliest material dates from 1938 and goes up to 1955. Let me first state that there is not a bad song in this collection. Some of what you'll hear are standards, some will be lesser known or maybe totally unknown songs, but everything is thoroughly enjoyable. The sound quality is incredible; this material is 45-60 years old, but it might as well have been recorded yesterday. I'm not kidding, it's that good.

The four-CD retrospective The Legendary Decca Recordings represented both an attempt to present the essence of Ella Fitzgerald's two-decade tenure at Decca Records and to defend that period against the conventional wisdom that not until she moved to Verve Records in the mid-'50s was her talent given full rein. Divided into four sections, the collection began with "The Very Best of Ella," not exactly a greatest-hits set, though it started with her first big hit, "A-Tisket, A-Tasket," and included such chart successes as "Undecided," "Cow-Cow Boogie," and "Stone Cold Dead in the Market."
