I may be mistaken, but I think this is Con's first CD, despite more than 30 records and a ridiculous number of tapes. Con, incidentally, was a co-founder of bands like Tangerine Dream and Cluster, although his own music has always been a lot less accessible. It's also nice to see that it's a collaboration with Jörg Thomasius, an East German musician, now getting wider recognition. Tolling Toggle presents 18 tracks of abstract electronic music, mixing analogue and digital synthesis, samples and acoustic sounds, creating slightly bizarre, spartan little worlds, where the conventional sound is shoved face-to-face with the musical outsider. …

One of the prime figures in the growth of Krautrock, Conrad Schnitzler made important contributions to the early history of Kraftwerk and Kluster. Like many in the Krautrock community, Schnitzler was greatly inspired by influences in the visual artistic world as well as the musical; he studied sculpture with Joseph Beuys, and composition with Karlheinz Stockhausen, also looking to John Cage and Pierre Schaeffer for inspiration. By 1969, he was working with Tangerine Dream, with whom he recorded Electronic Meditation. The album became one of the most distinctive in TD's discography, and Schnitzler deserved much of the credit for its chance-taking approach. …

After a scission of the avant-garde group "Kluster" due to the departure of Conrad Schnitzler, the two musicians Dieter Moebius and Hans Joachim Roedelius go to work in duet as "Cluster". The band's first years were clearly orientated to Krautrock and to experimental electronic music. Consequently, the production of the band started with massive, radical improvisations, constructed around electric organ works, electronic collages, guitar sound manipulations, feed back. The result is rather similar to Kluster's underground, conceptual music, very chaotic with lot of distortion and reverb. With its repetitive, hypnotic guitar patterns and embryonic electronic collages, the second album "II" can be seen as a classic in 70's German electronic underground…

The third incarnation of the legendary Krautrock project Kluster/Cluster expands their audience with contemplative, mature and intelligent electronic music. Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Onnen Bock and Armin Metz are Qluster, founded under the name of Kluster in 1969 by Roedelius, Dieter Moebius and Conrad Schnitzler. Kluster were responsible for two milestones of electronic music. Schnitzler quit the band two years later, leaving Roedelius and Moebius to carry on as Cluster. When the duo disbanded in 2010, Roedelius continued to fly the K/Cluster flag, this time as Qluster, joined by the keyboarder and electronic musician Onnen Bock.

The formation of Kluster can be referred to the activities of Conrad Schnitzler, one of Joseph Beuy's students at the Düsseldorf's Fine Arts Academy. Schnitzler was a key figure in the underground art scene in Berlin in the late 60's. He participated in the formation of the Zodiak Free Arts in 1968, with amongst others Hans Joachim Roedelius. Schnitzler soon met Dieter Moebius, an other student of Beuy's and asked him to become the third member of the ensemble Kluster in 1969. The trio's music directly reflected the free form aesthetic of the Art Lab in lengthy improvisational performances…

You may ask, ok, but what is sound like? Well try to imagine an alien Pierre Henry, a robot clon of Conrad Schnitzler, a rebellion of all Morton Subotnik devices or the most mechanical side of 80's industrial and maybe you could be close to a satisfactory definition. With no doubt Jorge Marrero (on all his sides) it's the best that Spain bring to electronic music since Esplendor Geométrico and Francisco López.
